Do y'all really never take the Tacoma out to play in the snow?? I read a lot of off-roading and rock climbing threads...but no one plays in snow...weird.

We don't get much snow here in TX, but when we do I'm out having a great time when the roads are deserted. I used to live in CO and had a blast.

I don't get it either. We drive trucks, not minivans. Snow is a blast if you aren't stupid about it.

Ok, not sure when I said to turn on/off snow at will??? I'm saying if it's snowing, avoid cliffs....maybe stay on flat/straight land.

Yeah, we have an abundance of flat land here in West Texas. At least you have a story for life now...and you're still around to talk about it.

Reading is for FOOLS! At least that is what the current school system teaches, so drop your expectations.

(My wife is a teacher, english too, and all they let her do is teach to the state tests, rather than teaching the kids out to read and write so that they can function in society and read their owners manuals...)

I can understand the OPs point to a degree. Our '04 4Runner has VSC and the manual says to click the button off to disengage. Well our vehicle does not have that button. In the snow, which we get our fair amount of up here in Vermont, sometimes to get unstuck, it is helpful to get some wheel-spin going. With the VSC feature, the brakes cut in and we go nowhere. Our basic solution is to shovel out a wheel path. We do not have to do this with our non VSC Tacoma.

i personally LOATHE traction control systems. even with it turned off it will turn back on if you get too crazy...

i unplugged the wheel sensor on the inside of the drivers side and no more traction control or abs. both of which suck in the snow

I'm kinda over that. Drive a 2wd v6 S10. Thing would spin out on the dampestof roads with just a little too much gas. Was very fun to drive though.

    your right

thats why i have gotten rear ended 3 times so far this year (all stopping at traffic lights). And every time the person behind me says they hit the brakes and it just buzzed at them. I can stop alot faster than the shmo behind me with ABS in snow. maybe i should plug it back in so i can take the same distance to stop...

according to NHTSA ABS can increase stopping distances of 22% or more on loose dirt or snow. Thats a lot

also in a recent study cars with anti-lock brakes are up to 65% more likely to be in fatal crashes than cars without them. this is due to the collision speed being greater since the ABS does not slow a car as much as a skidding car. Even though you have control, when an impact is inevitable, regardless of ABS or not, a skid will slow you down more...

What did people do before all this stuff?

BTW reason number two i turned the abs and Traction control off was due to having an auto locker in my truck. the abs and traction control would freak out all the time often applying brakes around corners... no thanks! ill drive my own car, not the computer

I don't think so...once you skid your traction goes to zero, and once it goes to zero, no energy is required to maintain the skid.

Traction = friction = transfer of kinetic energy.

10 years of engineering school has to be good for something...
