After reading several threads about tailgate locks I put on one of the keyed worm clamps and broke off the key. I got to messing with it the other day and couldn't believe how easily it came off. Thought about getting one of the Master tailgate locks until the thread about them not working was posted. So what I decided to do was make my tailgate non-removable.

I took the passenger side bracket off. Got a piece of metal and bent it on my press, cut it to fit and welded it into the groove that allows the tailgate to come off easily. I used a wet towel to protect the plastic shim inside the hinge Then I painted it with color match paint. I put the hinge on the swivel post, matched the holes in the tailgate up and put the 3 bolts back in. No more removable tailgate. I realize nothing is theft proof. The three bolts on the tailgate take all of 2 minutes to remove. So to say it isn't removable isn't really true. It does give me an added sense of security.

Of all the Tacoma's I have owned (5) I can't recall ever taking the tailgate off. With my 2012, if you want the gate off, you have to cut the wires for the camera. I don't ever see myself doing that

Mine came with a plug you could splice in if you wanted to remove the gate.
    Plug was provided not installed.
