Was out of town this past week and had the pleasure of driving my friend's 2016 DCSB SR5 4x4 with A/T with only 1,600 miles on it. The transmission on the SR5 felt and shifted much better than my 2016 DCSB TRD OR 4x4 A/T with over 12,000miles. The SR5 shifted smoother and felt more 'confident' in gear. It was especially noticeable when I got home and hopped back in my truck and sure enough after backing out of driveway and not even getting halfway down the block the truck revs up 500 to 800 rpms between shifts and feels like a slipping gutless dead fish. I have had the transmission checked by two different dealers. The first dealer I offered to pay them for the check, so they kept it overnight and said they checked it and it was full/normal but I found the paint I put on the bolts was not disturbed. The second dealer checked it by hooking it up to techstream and claimed it was full/normal--which we all know is not the proper way to check the fluid level on this trans--I didn't have time to stay there and leave the truck with them overnight. What a crock.

I remember you have been wanting to trade in for a 17 SR5. Did this seal the deal for you?

If I trade a vehicle right now I might as well pre-sign divorce paperwork as well. It would be my third new vehicle in as many years.

So, you still haven't had your fluid checked and memory reset?

I pulled the battery for an hour, it did nothing. I paid an outside mechanic to fill the fluid but have not noticed a difference in the shifting.

Based on the wide range of satisfaction with the transmissions (happy to crap), I don't think it is a design issue, but more likely a quality issue during the build of the truck. I really think some trucks must have gotten some foreign material in the transmission (valve body?) and some did not. This is likely why resetting the computer and filling to the correct level have little to no effect.... at least not consistently.

Plenty of placebo effect, being reported though ;)

I'm of the same mind; I think it's pieces of the turbine though.

I wasn't going to go there. I do believe this combo is a little different and takes some getting used to and is the cause of many of the complaints as much as the placebo is the cause of many resolutions.

Smitty has real problems and some others do too. My truck has been pretty good. A little trash in the transmission would really seem to fit the variety of issues and explain the lack of consistency.

Can you get it on video? 800 RPM of slippage is a lot, especially for an auto. That isnt exactly something toyota can scoff at.

The early 2000's ford 5r55e auto transmissions would get a 2-3 "flare" (about 3-500 RPM of slippage between shifts) and that was the initial death kiss for that transmission. It only went downhill after that and wasn't a question of if the transmission would go, but how soon. Unfortunately, even though I had the flare for years, it still took 140k miles before it finally wouldn't let me out of reverse on cold mornings....well past any sort of powertrain warranty.

I think anyone that has a level of common sense and some degree of intelligence, can read between the lines. I do hope Smitty's problems get resolved. I have 4 more hours till I take delivery of my 6MT OR, and there have been MT trans problems reported as well.

Good luck, better jump on the highway, get it in 5th/6th and check for that 2000 RPM buzz before you drop the cash!

Thank you. They are aware I want to do a 1 hour, 45 mile test drive, after salesman picks me up from airport. They are ok with it.

I have an sr5 and my father has a trdor. He has noticed slippage with only about 600 miles on his. I'm at around 2k and haven't noticed any. My truck drives smooth and haven't noticed problems. He is gunna try and break the 1k mark before he actually brings it in and see if it's just a break in thing.

Dealer Service tells me the gearing is different from my TRD OR 4x4 V6 to the SR5 4x4 V6 because of locking rear differential and that is why mine drives so much differently.

3.90 rear end for the SR5 auto and 4.30 rear end for the OR auto I believe.
