I much prefer the feel of the 3.90

Well a) couldn't find an OR in my area (they sell the minute they get off the truck) and below MSRP and b) got a hell of a deal on my sr5 which has more features than my 15 sport did. And though I knew going into my purchase of the issues I have yet to have one of them, my favorite Tacoma by far. Do feel bad for Smitty and the others having issues.

The 4.30 should give the feel of more low end grunt and better acceleration..... not a big difference.

I feel like the transmission on my TRD OR is shift happy, it feels like it slips or flares between 1st and 2nd gear or 2nd and 3rd gear from time to time. This seems to happen usually when I first start driving the truck in the morning. It also seems downshift happy when coasting down the street in residential areas. It feels dogged down like I'm towing 1000lbs behind the truck.

I thought all autos were 3.90 (SR5, OR, Sport, etc.) and sticks were 4.30.

Larger diameter tyres will not "lower" your ratio. A lower ratio is higher numerically, i.e. 4.30 is a lower ratio than 3.90.

I think what was implied is that Smitty could just put bigger tires on to make those 4.30s act like 3.90s.

MY SR5 4x2 auto has been great... I have no issues with the tranny, my only complain is that the engine seems like its underpowered to be in the truck. But the tranny, responds to what my foot does rather nice. My only real gripe with the truck is that it seems to consume gas like no other when idling. I usually sit in my truck during lunch and goof off on my phone, or take a nape, etc... and run the truck for AC and music...

When I took my truck in for the 5k check I had them check the trans fluid (just to be safe), even though the truck had shifted great ever since I got it.

When they gave me back my truck, they told me the trans fluid was fine and they had test drove my truck along with 3 other vehicles and that my truck actually shifted a lot better than all 3. They couldn't pin point why mine shifted better my only thought was because my truck was already "programmed to my driving" from breaking it in past the 1200 miles.

My truck has over 12k miles and the trans/driving has not improved or changed significantly since taking delivery. I didn't care for it much when I test drove it but figured it would improve with mileage. This has proven to be a false concept for my vehicle.

Not sure that is really accurate. If anything also I think this would make the transmission even MORE shift-crazy as it tries to compensate for turning the bigger tires down the road. The truck already drives like it is bogged down, or towing about 1000 to 1500 lbs behind it constantly. The last thing I'd think would help is to add more resistance to the drive train in the form of larger tires.

That's unfortunate to hear, have you noticed any significant diffrence with the ECT button?

With all the negative feedback the new trans gets you would think Toyota would come out with an updated software program to make the truck more responsive but not sure how they would do that without affecting the gas milage.

My OR has identical behavior. The random downshifting while coasting at modest speeds is just baffling.

I borrowed a 2016 TRD Off-Road 4x4 from a dealer for the day. Was really hating the transmission and power delivery. I don't know how long this truck had been on the lot.

I just picked up my 2016 TRD Sport 4x2 yesterday, freshly delivered "special order". Power delivery and transmission behavior issues are not present at all. I wonder if that 4x4 OR had the trans fluid issue?

To me it seems like most OR 4x4 seem to be having the issue.

You have the 3.9 gears. Only the manual trucks come with 4.3 gearing. Your dealer is full of shit

The ECT button makes the truck shift differently but I'm hesitant to go down that path. Let's not oversimplify the solution to the challenges by circumventing the basic design of how the truck is to be operated (without ECT button)

If this were me and dealer is claiming fluids were fine and you had an independent shop "fill" it then I would drop the pan and do an inspection myself and a flush. Then refill to proper spec. At this point what do you have to lose? If your trans temps seems to be normal on long drives and everything looks good and guild is at correct level then maybe hats just the characteristic of that particular transmission. If it has problems they are only gonna get worse and at some point the dealer should be able to say "yeah, that's not normal" and they can replace it or document it so if you have an issue later on you can have some ammo in a fight against Toyota if they don't offer you an extension or goodwill replacement outside of warranty

If the tires and wheels are heavier, there would be some offset, but the effective ratio would be like the SR5.
