OP I'm looking on Autotrader and I'm seeing a dblcab 4x4 trd offroad edition for 28465.00 before taxes. That's a pretty cool deal. It's probably not close to where you live but it would be worth a plane ticket. In Houston they don't really discount very much either so I drove an hour to get 3k off a sr5 4x4 but if I would have seen this deal I would have flown to get it. Maybe next time...

I used Costco in the Bay Area. From what I read on TW, my deal was within 2-300 of the best deals posted anywhere and those usually included stories of 7 hour dealer visits to negotiate those prices. I had 2 visits because I had to order what I wanted, but the total time between two visits, even with ordering was under an hour. I would buy back 6 hours of my life for that 200 again any day of the week.

op - have you ever used USAA's Car Buying Service? Decent deals on used, great deals on new. I found my truck there. They have a lot of free products/services available, many of which I am still figuring out. But the Car Buying Service is a pretty good one.

I went through the True car process and had the dealers shoot me the prices. Two where crooked as the day is long, the they had additional items like Nitrogen in the tires (BULL SHIT add ons that they disclosed on top of the Truecar pricing. The last dealer gave me a price and said this is it... out the door...That's the one I went with.
Paid Cash plus trade in Value walked out with my Title in hand. Well, it had to go to the DMV and get redone LOL...The dealer gave me a great price on my trade too. It was easily the best experience I had ever had in buying a vehicle. If others got better prices good on them, but I think I did pretty good. My TRD Offroad is loaded with entune + nav

op - I just priced a 2104 TRD Off Road 4x4 DCSB through USAA. $29,711. Keep in mind this is a fictitious truck that doesn't necessarily exist. But it sends out to dealers, kinda like truecar. They'll either say yes or no.

No wonder those are rare, you're about 100 years too far. A 2104 tacoma for 29? I'll take one with hovering suspension

USAA uses true car. I messed with their site recently as well and was kind of disappointed that it was just true car, thought they had their own set-up. The price difference you got is probably due to location.

    A lot of stuff.
Back to topic, Sorry to hear about your truck getting stolen. Nothing worse than an invasion of your privacy but some butt heads. Thankfully your dog was not in the truck. I wish there was a way to prevent this, but sometimes when the bad guys want something they figure out how to get it. Stay strong, the story is not over yet, it will be a good one to tell.

Probably option differences, or as stated above location.

I had forgotten you were USAA. I am actually surprised, and maybe a little disappointed that the Costco price was cheaper (though be it only $500) less than the USAA price.

Also, I am on the side of the fence of once the truck is stolen, I would want a new one. I dont want the old tainted one back. I pray mine doesnt get stolen, but if it does, I hope they know what they are doing and get it out quick, and I hope my insurance pays out as good as yours!

When I bought my Tundra, I worked out their 'best' price with the dealer, then looked at USAA, then Costco and ended up with Costco being the best deal. I was also a bit surprised they beat USAA, but then I realized that Costco has WAY more members than USAA, so has more leverage in negotiating prices.

I tried the Costco buying service, and was very disappointed with the price I got from the local dealer. It was just below the sticker price. So I then started getting Internet pricing from every dealer in a 100 mile range, and shopping the lowest price around. Ended up getting my truck for over $2,000 less than the Costco price. Never thought to try the USAA buying service.

+1 on the Costco program. I have bought 3 new vehicles through them for various family mamebers (and my tacoma). Excellent program.
