Glad you got back safely. When you take it to the dealer, send me a PM and I'll give you my Toyota Corporate case number so that you can give it to them when they try to tell you that there haven't been any other reports of that same problem.

Is everybody convinced that a worsening differential howl on a new vehicle isn't a safety issue? I'm not...

It could be, but I doubt it would fail catastrophically in a way that would lead to a crash. It would probably just continue to get louder and then start vibrating. It probably depends a lot on what you're doing at the time.

Do you also smell clutch when you are starting to back up while on a hill, when you release your clutch pedal the trans brake holds then releases after a few seconds and while trying to back up you smell clutch

Unfortunately so. My experiences with them in the past have ranged from disappointing to near criminal.

Yep, typically before a differential decides to grenade, there will be noticeable vibration (for a while too). You will definitely feel it in the seat and the howling will become a very loud whirring noise starting at low speeds and increasing in pitch as your speed increases. My differential howls right now at ~5000 miles, most noticeable under light throttle at 59-60 mph. I will have the dealer make note of it, but if there is a serious problem with how the pinion bearing is situated in the differential or how the gears are meshed due to a manufacturing error, I guarantee it will not make it the 60,000 mile warranty without it becoming unbearable.

The differential in my last truck went bad (pinion bearing) and the vibration was so bad that my rear view mirror was a complete blur at 65+ mph. It also sounded like I had a loud power drill strapped under the bed and turned on while I was driving. I am almost 100% certain the Tacoma differentials are in no danger of failing catastrophically with this amount of howling.

I guess I've been watching too much Fight Club.

    ...

    ...

Narrator: A new car built by my company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 mph. The rear differential locks up. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one.
Business woman on plane: Are there a lot of these kinds of accidents?
    Narrator: You wouldn't believe.
Business woman on plane: Which car company do you work for?
    Narrator: A major one.

Just for the hell of it, when it sticks maybe see if rev matching for the next gear with the clutch down allows for it to come free easily. Obviously not a solution but atleast maybr a way to deal with it and its always good to rev match anyway if you can. Personally ive been practicing double clutching my down shifts just for the fun of it.

I just got off the phone with the Case Manager from Toyota as a result of the first woman I spoke to escalating my case. I spoke to the Regional Rep for the Kansas City region. His name was Danny Castro and he was the most rude, uncaring, and least helpful person that I've ever spoken to. He refused to do anything for me and told me that I wouldn't be allowed to speak to anyone else about this matter. He said that without my dealer not only replicating the complaints, but coming up with a solution they will do absolutely nothing.

I'll bring it up again to the local dealer when I take it back to have the control arm howling TSB done next week. If that doesn't work, I'll have to explore legal options of some sort. I think I'd probably have a case for breach of contract and conducting business in bad faith since they aren't even trying to hold up their warranty responsibilities.

I have never been this upset at a company before.

I'm sure that this post will bring out the trolls, but I had to vent somewhere.

Yes I have. I just didn't want to point that out since he's just trying to help. Also, I'm at the dentist getting a root canal. Pretty crappy day so far.

I spoke with the same guy.

If you are going to Reliable, talk with Gene. He's the service manger and worked with me and went on a test drive with me.
