Ok so today my mom was driving my truck and when she was coming from work today (couple of hours ago) something the size of a golf ball hit the windshield on the drivers side. Lucky she didn't get hurt. We're making a police report also.

    Any suggestions?

A lot of insurance Co will let you replace 1 windshield a year.. or you might have like a $50 to $100 glass deductible.

No need to call the cops unless you thing it was done on purpose.

Open the phone book and search "Auto glass repair" or file a claim with your auto insurance company.

What everyone else said. Police report would only be needed if you were holding a separate party responsible for your damage.

If it's a small crack then it can be fixed by a glass repair company (like Safelite) with resin filling. Otherwise you'll be looking at replacing the whole windshield, which should be covered less deductible.

Pictures or it didn't happen.. Maybe she was driving near a golf course or driving range.

I'm glad that your mom was okay. You can always replace a windshield but not your mom.

    Coming soon!
I just went through a windshield replacement on my truck about a month ago. I will spare everyone the details but I can tell you to insist on a Pilkington replacement windshield. If it is a Pilkington it will have have the "United LN" stamp just like the original windshield but will not say "Toyota". This is the same glass used in the truck from the factory. You will not be disapointed.

There is no mandatory glass coverage in California. Call up Safelite.

I just had a PPG/PGW windshield installed today for $220 with Gerber Collision & Glass - very happy with it. Had a Safelite installed on my wife's a couple years back...windshield was wavy as hell...had it replaced eventually. Safelite makes their own glass, but PPG and Pilkington are OEM suppliers for many auto manufacturers.

I had my truck less than 24 hours and got hit by a huge rock from a 3axle toy hauler going the opposite way. The glass place here I'm town will wave the ded. If its $100 or less. Also like said above, a police report wont help unless you saw it come from another car, have their info, and can prove it was done maliciously. Otherwise its considered an act of god.

Won't claiming a windshield count against you as a claim?

Should not be a claim because broken windshield is considered a safety issue. Most ins. cos. will replace at no charge because of this. Mine, USAA, does.

Not to threadjack, but ever since getting my new tires I have thrown rocks like crazy getting on the highway after a gravel road. It's to the point where I wait for both lanes to be clear as far as possible before getting on the highway so I don't accidentally throw a rock onto someones windshield behind me. This seems like the place to ask, if a rock did damage a windshield behind me would I be held accountable? Since the rock did come from my car, but was not done on purpose. Act of god, or malacious intent?
