High possibility, have an appointment with a more reputable dealership on Wednesday so will update this when I know for sure.

Have not looked inside but from the outside there are signs of water leaking out that I am now seeing.

Sounding like my exploding battery theory was not that far off the mark. I missed if this truck still had warranty coverage? If yes, I would be asking for more than just a new battery here. You got quite a mess on your hands.

On a 2016? I don’t think they warranty the battery for that long.

Brought it the the more reputable dealership today. Charged me $140 just to look at the issue. Not starting off good. Will share when I get a call from them.

Would the warranty cover that fee if they need to replace the battery?

Not too sure. The service representative made it sound like my warranty won’t cover anything. I’m sure they will try to tell me that this is a user error of some kind even though it’s a 2021 with 9500 miles.

Where do you live ? This is the second bad dealer . That's total BS charging you $ 140.00 on 2021 with a problem you didn't cause .

have you taken it in for the 6 month service? the year and miles this has got to be on them, i would have got in their face when they asked for $140. just to look it over. whoever you are dealing with you have to go over their pee brain head and talk to someone else.

Not saying OP caused the problem but how do you know he didn't? Could be he hit something in the road and it caused this. If that's the cause he should be charged to diagnose and repair the issue (or his insurance). If it's found to be a warranty issue he should be refunded the $140 and Toyota pays for it. No reason the dealer should be paying for this unless it's their fault.

Good luck OP; hopefully it's a warranty issue.

OP, good luck. Sounds like the stealerships in your area are sketchy. Don't let them push you around.

Can't imagine a battery on a new truck not being under warranty. Can't imagine why they would even think to charge you a diag fee, either. Either way it is going to be warranty - bad alternator or bad battery.

not sure about the tacomas but I have had cars in the past with a battery go dead not explode and they towed and replaced it no cost to me. I was going to say a coolant leak but the other comments seem more related to the battery. Never seen that happen before. hopefully gets sorted out.

just a thought. Sometimes on issues that they could have the possibility of customer caused problems they will take a systems troubleshooting fee. When it is found to be a non-customer caused issue they refund the troubleshooting fee.

Again, not saying it is, just a possibility

Totally agree with that and I have had that happen in a quasi-warranty situation where the problem may, or may not, be under warranty. But, in this situation, they should not be charging the customer up front (or even suggesting they may be a fault). We need a Wall of Shame pinned for bad dealerships imo.
