Just posting this as a heads up to others who might be working in this area at some point.

Opened up the shifter console to replace the shift position lamp and spotted this mystery spring at the bottom of the well. I replaced the lamp about a year ago and from the look of things things back then, I can say with 99% confidence no one had ever been in there before or had it apart. (It also looked vaguely familiar.) After studying the mechanism further I saw the small circle/indentation in the white plastic piece which is aligned with the nub on the bottom of the shift over-ride button, and figured that must be where it belonged. (This lever is spring-loaded somehow -without- this spring in place BTW) I assembled it and gently eased it in place. Everything works as expected including the manual shift-lock over-ride button. (which also functions without this spring) If you have this area apart to change the bulb or watever, like cleaning the debris and spills under there, be on the lookout for this spring. Maybe someone will confirm someday.
