    Hello Tacoma World,

This is my first post, I just bought my first Tacoma about a week ago. So far its been an awesome truck. Its an 01 4cyl RWD Auto PreRunner.

    On to my question...

I have a strange switch to the left of my steering wheel that seems to do nothing. I searched many forums trying to figure out its use but i couldn't find any that had the same switch. It has the TRD package but it's a 2wd 4cyl so i'm not too sure what that consists of. I thought maybe it was a diff lock? Im not sure.

(The Up and Down one.. not the light dimmer)

    Can anyone identify this?

(Please do not turn this forum into a fight or argument about petty nonsense like so many other forums have)

    Thank You in advance
If this has already been solved elsewhere I am sorry I didn't find it.

It's an aftermarket switch, assuming the PO wasn't the original owner there's no way to know

Looks like rear glass slider switch automatic mod. Does your rear glass slide manually? Check that

    Good luck

It's obviously a defective self destruct button.

Hahahaha great first post! I first said the same thing to myself.

Also could ask the seller what it's for if known.

I asked the seller and he had no idea. My rear window is manual and the switch seems to do nothing. i dont notice any lights coming on or any difference while driving. I thought maybe someone had the same switch and could tell me what it did, but if its aftermarket there's no way to know. i guess i could jack up the back and somehow test if it locks the diff..

    None yet.
Seems like an unlikely switch to use as a diff lock...
i am guess its a momentary two pole switch. Maybe pop it out and get creative tracing the wires. I wouldn't be surprised if its something that has been long cut out and is now just a bunch of mystery wires tucked up somewhere.
If you were in Canada I would ask if there had ever been a snow plow on the truck. But seeing as you are from Cali I would doubt that is the reason.

I had a "mystery switch" on my second car and it turned off my odometer. Greedy bastard before me probably put a crap ton of miles on it. :annoyed:

 Sub'd to see what it is

Its the transmogrifier switch. Or maybe the Flux capacitor. Its supposed to be for your rear locker, but it is obviously not a stock switch. Attached is a picture i pulled of of tw (I'LL REMOVE IT IF IT UPSETS THE OWNER, AS IT IS NOT MY PIC) circled in red is the locker, for your reference. Dont go over 5 miles an hour if it actually turns it on as per the instructions of the truck. Id just trace the wires...

Looks to me like a winch control. Do you have an aftermarket bumper that might have had a winch on it at one time?

Thought that was automatic and engaged at 88?

OP I would guess a winch that a previous owner took out before sale.

^^^^^Subd for more answers like this....And to figure out where the wires go. For real though, I'm sure it's something that got removed 10 years ago.
