I have been "rallying around the flag" for my whole life because I love my Country. It would seem to me that your little comment about me here shows that you don't like when a guy loves his country and hates to see it being slowly broken down the way it is. Like I said before-I have observed a LOT goings on here for many years in SF to make me feel the way I do. I do not like at all the little "quiet war" china has waged on us relying upon time, one-sided trade practices, and good ole American naivete. Yeah I am a patriotic American. Sue me. You put that graph up to illustrate that America is the military bigpig on that graph and that is it. Nobody-I mean nobody does more for this world than the U.S. and there is no denying it.

    Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!

Until recently neither county or pretty much any country in Europe could hardly tie there shoes without help and leadership from the U.S I'm not talking about just WW2 and before. Without the U.S's military might (provided by out outrageous expenditures) Europe would be Russian territories. Besides, every military expert knows the militarily Europe is very limited. They do not have the power or capabilities to project power or operate in an expeditionary role. Also, individually each of those nations are relatively weak... and could not oppose Russia or China in any military fight.

Now, recently they've been working on a collective European Union Security pact. Which has increased their cohesion and capabilities. Now combined they are a formidable regional military... but can't project power. Individually each country can act in small "brush fire" wars and limited peace keeping activities but thats about it. With the united EU they will have increased power and in the future they may become more of a military power. Theres a reason why every major war/battle that has been lead by the UN or NATO has had the U.S as the HQ element.

but, Europe on the other hand has a huge political clout due to its economic power and combine that with its strategic location that is the only reason why their input is tolerated in most U.S foreign policy

As a member of the military who has actually worked as a part of NATO... only the British are capable of operating at our level (but much smaller). Remember the USMC is larger and more capable than the entire British Army and Royal Marines combined... and thats are smallest force. I understand the misconception that many people have about our military especially those born outside of the country... but believe me... its not as limited as we make it appear. We intentionality limit ourselves.

A renewed Korean War would absolutely demolish the peninsula but ultimately the U.S and South Koreans would prevail... even if China makes the mistake of joining on the NK side. And the causualties will be heaviest on Koreans especially NK. Additionally, SK has a large advanced military and will make NK pay dearly if needed too... it is not the backward enhanced police force of 1950 when the Korean war started.

Now...the only way we could lose is if we limit ourselves politically (which we will). But even in a limited force we'd bring a lot of fire power and expertise.

also, unfortunately with our current commitments around the world we'd easily be hampered though... but I'd reason that a hot war between the Koreas would immediately become Problem numero uno!

lets not underestimate the situation though... this is a significant event. Combined with the SK ship Chenoan sinking awhile back the North is inviting war... SK has demonstrated incredible patience and restraint... I'm extremely surprised

Didn't read the thread, because most of the time this stuff on here is parroting soundbites from major news outlets by people who are sadly misinformed.

    I will just add:

    Re: China:

China will not fuck with South Korea, nor aid North Korea militarily against South Korea. They need the United States to keep buying their shit as badly as we need them to keep making it.

China is extremely dangerous. Economically. Their military capability is irrelevant.

This is not true at all...

While China is extremely dangerous economically, it is a military power...

Currently like Europe China cannot effectively project its military power globally like the U.S or even Russia, but any war we get drawn into in the region will likely have China involved. Fighting China in China will be a great devastating war... probably resulting in our win, but at what cost? In the future with their increased spending and research into several non-traditional types of warfare (i.e cyber, espionage, etc) and regular warfare (i.e Carriers, submarines, airforce) I can bet that their would be a significant shift in military power. Not necessarily with reduction in our power but an equalization with China.

Combine that with their economic control/influence over the U.S creates a China with significant world changing power.

With the looming future resource conflicts China and Russia should always be planned for...

You're a little late on that statement....they already have nuclear weapons and have tested them. And we believe they are selling that information to Iran, including uranium.

I would have to respectfully disagree on this, all though they have slightly made their system a little more free. It's still very much a communist country.

Clipped the rest because it was irrelevant. You're off topic. I never said China wasn't a military power. I said their military power was irrelevant. Which it is.

We have just as much influence over them. If they stop making, we're screwed because manufacturing costs balloon. If we stop buying, they're screwed because they need the influx of foreign dollars (for now - how long that will be the case is another thread entirely).

There will NOT be a war between the US and China in the next ten years. Global business interests (which are much much more powerful than nations now) will not allow it - it would be too harmful to their profits. The only way it could possibly occur is by proxy (i.e. the Koreas), and in that case military power is moot - economic power matters far more.

Planned for? That shit is long lost. It should've been planned for during Clinton's first term. Every other developed and semi-developed country in the world is WAY ahead of us in alternative energy implementation (even though our technology is the most advanced - in the lab).

Basically, to ensure our energy future we need to annex a few Middle Eastern countries. But that's pretty much under way.

If it weren't the truth, it might be a problem.

Businesses run the world now. Governments are there largely for show. Why do you think our own government was so beholden to bailing out the banking, auto, and now health insurance industries over the past 3 years? With public dollars?

There's more money in keeping the Wal-Mart-opoly alive, and that requires US/Chinese cooperation...for the time being anyway.

No offense to you guys in the service, but not everyone is looking to attack us militarily.
