Yeah, not wheel/tire forum, trying to get a pretty quick answer since it's sunday and I have to resume my 150mile/day commute tomorrow.

These tires have about 5000 miles on them. Saw this asshole of a nail hanging out right on the closest tread to the sidewall. Opted to not get road hazard protection when I bought them because I figured the odds of getting a nail before the tires were worn significantly(too worn to pair a new tire with 3 old ones) was low.

What would you do? I guess I can get discount tire or whoever to measure tread depth of other three and see if a brand new one would be too mismatched, but I know new tires wear rapidly until they level off (like first few 32nds of an inch wear quicker in first 5-10k miles). What a bitch though. If I get new tires I really want to get new wheels while I'm at it and step up to 285/75/16.. but of course they have to order wheels.

If the nail isn't deep (looks more like a tack almost from the head of it) then they could pull it and no harm done.. but if they pull it and it's too deep, and they can't patch, I'll have to make a decision right there on the spot.

If I were you, I'd get them to take the nail out and see if they can patch(or plug) it. If they can't then I'd get a new tire. It would be better to find out they can patch it rather than just going and buying a new tire, right? That's just my opinion though.

get a patch kit and be done with it.... unless you want to have the dealership fix it under warranty.

They should be able to patch that. Or better yet go spend $12 and get a plug kit and fix it yourself in ten minutes for next to nothing. let us know how it goes. GL

That may NOT have gone all the way thru--Patch it--no big deal.
It looks like a roofing nail--they are short.
No sweat. If you plan to pull it out yourself--do it at the tire place.
had a sheetrock screw in my tire two weeks ago--had it fixed-NOT a big deal-Just fix it. triple A--AAA has a free repair -if you are a member.

Why don't you measure the tread depth yourself? I bet your other three tires aren't that worn. These tires are lifed for what, 50k? So you are only 10% into the treadlife.

A puncture that close to the sidewall cannot be patched, because the patch covers a good area inside the tire. The patch can't bend around corners.

Some shops (and TireRack.com) can shave tires to your specified tread depth for a cost. I think it's a service originally meant to cater to weekend track day racers.

BTW, my winter tires picked up two punctures the first year. Historically, about half of my tires over the last 12 years have seen punctures, so I consider road hazard warranty a must.

Just take a walk down a street or road, any where. You would be suprised at what is on the ground. Good lesson to carry a small pump (electric) and patch kit. You may find with a little soap and water, it's not leaking at all

I have gone 50k on a set of tires, and had a plug in it from day 30.

Yeah, just looked up plugging and some youtube videos of it. Will probably try that. Don't think it's losing air, certainly not quickly (though I could have picked it up an hour ago for all I know). Discount tire is closed and Sears claims my tire is now special order though I bought the set from them two months ago.

Guess tomorrow on lunch break I'll drive to discount tire, pull nail, see if it leaks, have plug kit on hand with wheel already turned as far outward as I can, if anything with the plug doesn't go as intended, be there for DT to address... though they don't carry my tire in store anywhere either. Fawk.

My girlfriend was driving my moms car and it got a nail in the tire in nearly the exact same spot as that. So we took it to Wal-Mart to get them to patch it, and they said, "the location that the nail is in we are not allowed to patch or plug that. We are only allowed to do it in the treads."

I looked at him and said, but sir that is in the treads, and his said, according to the government that is considered sidewall. He then proceeded to show me a picture of a tire and the allowed places on a tire that they are allowed to work on. He said most tire shops will have this poster up and will not be able to work on it, unless you try a mom and pop shop that might do it.

Just figured I would throw that in there from my past experience, which was 2 weeks ago.

plug the thing and be done. then get a on board air and keep the plug kit in the car........it will happen again at some point in your driving, better be ready rather than a victom when your not around town.

Yeah, I worked at Sears Automotive for a while and had to turn dozens of people away for patches because of that same crap. Read enough good things about plugs in last 15 minutes that I'd be cool with that, much better than new tire or 4 new tires.

I have like $2500 cash right now for a commuter car, really would have to see a lot of that go toward tires and ruin my chance of getting a gas sipper for 750miles/wk :p Rest assured that if I do get a commuter car, especially one that needs tires, it's getting road hazard. Won't sting so much getting protection on tires that cost $80/pop either :)

    neglect, mostly.
don't over think it man. it's a simple fix. Slime (that terrible fix a flat glue crap company) sells a plug kit for $6 a walmart with everything you need for this fix and like, 7 more. buy that, come home and turn the wheel out and roll forward to where you can access it. if it's on the back you might have to take the tire off. safety glass, pair of pliers, pull it out. if it's just in the tread youre probably fine. if air come out, bore out the hole, glue the plug, cram it in there, little twisty, little snatchy and go about your day.

i did this on one of my new tires, ah, 2 days ago.

Dont go to walmart, horrible customer service, go to a nearby tire shop if you dont patch it yourself, they did mine for 26 bucks a couple months ago.
