[The Ontario County District Attorney's office took the evidence in Stewart's case to a grand jury, which found there was no basis for criminal charges, D.A. Michael Tantillo announced Wednesday.
Tantillo said toxicology reports revealed that Ward was under the influence of marijuana at a high enough level to impair judgment.]

Hmmmm. Is this new? I quit following the story.

I doubt anything further will come of this in terms of civil suits and whatnot.

Kid deserved it anyway. If he was racing while high he could've just as easily killed someone else or killed himself.

    RIP Asshole

It's an unfortunate event that could have been avoided. I wonder if anyone knew he was lighting up before the race? I could see where they might be held liable.

Doug, how so? Any impaired driver is at 50/50 risk if personal injury, death, or injuring or killing someone else.
He compounded his odds of accident further still just by being on a raceway with many other vehicles in close proximity and driving at high speeds.

Is that not the definition of "if you play with fire, you're going to get burned?" I'm not saying the kid was the devil and deserved to die, sure he was a great person in life. But if you make the choices he made that night in that environment and you pay the price for it, I would say he got exactly what he deserved. Darwin doesn't reward being a complete idiot.

If Stewart ran him down and tested to be under the influence of drugs/alcohol he'd be in prison.

Only referring to you're "deserved it". I don't think he "deserved it" is all personally he was dumb as fuck getting out of car in the first place so like I said the outcome is no surprise..

Gotcha. You're one of the more rational old men I've ever seen so I wondered if I was missing something you weren't. We agree here.

Wow! Didn't see that in any of the news stories until now. Talk about the wrong place, wrong time, and wrong drug. If this is correct, Ward was totally irresponsible with his life and the lives others.
I wonder if the grand jury was held to see if there were also any charges that Ward may have faced. I know charging a dead man is pointless, but mitigating circumstances are always considered. "At fault" is often a matter of percentages than an actual clear cut decision.

My 2¢.... If he smoked pot semi regularly or regularly then honestly I don't think that had anything to do with what happened. How can they say for sure he was impaired at the time, he could have been at a Bob Marley festival :rasta: the weekend before and smoked way too much, that stuff stays in ur system for 30 days or more... Never heard of a test to tell u how high or how impaired from weed someone is. If it was like first time or first in s long time I could see him being a lil impaired. Sad that this is going to define what happened in some people's eyes. Dumb move getting out sober of high. He payed the consequences!

& don't know if mentioned but the very term "nerf bar"(s) originated from & for dirt tracking up to the super modifieds that guys like Parnelli Jones pretty much wrote the book on sprints, modifieds & midgets...

Point is theres always been alot of contact in this particular brand

of racing the nerfs protected the sides & helps keeping the open wheels from getting tangled up , thats how much accepted contact there is

FWIW, THC is metabolized very quickly, and someone who has THC prevalent in their urine for 30 days + is a fairly heavy and regular user. Someone with a high level of THC is either that, or a recent user. No telling which category he fell under, but regardless, drug use + racing don't go together and I'm surprised that tests aren't given to drivers to ensure they're not driving onto the track under the influence.

He deserved to die and he's an asshole, just because he smoked a natural herb that should be legal. He didn't stick a needle in his arm and shoot up a real drug. Yes Ward killed himself, but the fact that he smoked pot shouldn't change anything, but I know it does. I'm not sure how many races Ward won, but I guarantee he was high before those races and it apparently didn't effect his judgement then, did it. Back about 12 years ago I used to be a every day pot smoker, so I have more insight then some of you. An every day pot smoker can get stoned and barely be affected by it. I've raced Go Karts for 10 years until l recently, I can tell you that several talented drivers that I know get stoned before every heat race and it pumps them up and makes them drive better. They have also won countless races at high levels and finish ahead of professional drivers, Indy car drivers and so on at certain big races. Yes, while stoned, so it's not that big of a deal as some of you are making it.

    Relax.

Before you start railing about "pot being bad" I didn't say anything about it. I don't care what method of inebriated he chose, my beef is he was inebriated in the first place. If you smoke weed, cool, I don't care and not every drug talk requires you to get worked up about marijuana laws and public opinion.

Don't give a fuck about the plight of pot smokers and don't care for the attitude of every person who says the word marijuana needing to be told by someone who smokes that it isn't a big deal and you are misunderstood. Go start a legalize it thread if you want to be emotional.

Fact is he was under the effect of a stimulant. Fact is stimulants by definition alter brain function and mechanical response. Fact is he raced while under these effects to his physical body. Fact is he died, and that his judgment (being a brain function) was in an abnormal state which may have contributed to the circumstances of his death.

Those are the facts. The rest of your post is emotional babble. Save the victim shit for elsewhere.
