My only real complaint about my Tacoma is Toyota's nav system. I'm not really a fan of tech and fancy stereo stuff anyway. But the nav system is garbage. As a result, I use the nav on my iPhone...if I'm going to use it at all. The free app "Waze" is growing on me. Seems like Toyota could just blue tooth link the iPhone screen to display in that space and be done with it.

Had an Acura years ago and Honda's navi was intuitive, easy and fun. I don't have experience with other makes' nav systems...I hear Audi's and BMW's are good, but not easy. But I wish Toyota would just scap it and save the money.

What exactly do you not like about it? I don't use mine on a daily basis as I generally know where I'm going but the dozen or so times I've needed it to get me somewhere it seemed to work fine.

I use mine while traveling and have had very few problems. The problems I have had with it are NO different than any other Nav system ive used(Ford, Chev, Nuvii, Android) Its shown every road ive wanted to travel, and been spot on with times and distances. Thats including forest roads and back roads literally all across this country.

I should have added how minor this complaint is. I don't need or use it much at all. I usually know where I'm going and don't travel much. But it came on my '17 Pro...and could be a lot better. I think it is difficult to enter an address, difficult to take a different route than the one it wants me to take, and is hard to turn the thing off when you no longer need it. It also doesn't pull in real time data as well as the free iPhone apps (think the one I like is called is called "Waze"). Waze alerts you for traffic and cops ahead. Seems like Toyota could pull that data into the truck? Like I said, I'm no techie. But this doesn't seem too hard if a free app can do it. My Acura had one knob that controlled everything...kinda like a mouse. It guessed at partially filled in addresses, had lots of locations already on it. It was just super easy...and this was 10 years ago. Seems like Toyota would be equal to Honda's system.

I agree it is kind of a pain in the ass to enter an address! but mine does alert me to traffic and also asks me if I would like to reroute around said traffic.

I haven't noticed that mine is inaccurate. And I haven't compared it to other makes. I had a buddy who had a Garmin that was pretty good years ago...except for the wires and mounting bracket all over the place. I'm not pissed at all. I love my truck and would buy it again in a minute. But if the Pro could opt out of the navi, I would. Just a little underwhelming.

Mine does pretty good with data. This is from Big Frog. It's basically a double track in the mountains of South Tennessee /North Ga. Traffic info and everything. This is pretty much the kind if reception I've gotten all the way across the US. Some places are spotty but for the majority of miles traveled I get good reception. 20170219_105302.jpg

Dont feel like your the only one I've seen a lot of people on here that feel the way you do about it. Do you get the red green and yellow roads on yours when your not using the nav to get somewhere indicating the amount of traffic on the road? Im just wondering if peoples location has something to do with how well it works or doesnt work.

I've got the NAV that uses data through the phone.... it is garbage.

I ended up getting some T-Track, cutting to length, rounding the edges, painting the body color (MGM), and mounting to the dash bezel like here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/a-truly-universal-mount.491843/

Stuck a Ram X-Grip, now I have a great nav system.

Phones are limited by signal availability.

In dash are limited by lack of free updates (you still have to pay the OE, correct?) and lack of portability.

Units like Nuvi can stay current (important in cities with lots of road construction), can be used in any vehicle you own, and you can take it with you on a flight based trip and pop it in your rental car. And they cost a fraction of what you pay for the in dash unit in the vehicle.

I do like the display on the in dash units though. Too bad they don't ditch the old tech proprietary stuff and have a method of free updates.

Meh - I very rarely use "bitch in the box" as I and wifey call all Navs & GPS units. Seemed ok when we used it to find a Dairy queen in a unfamiliar area

Well, I've only had experience with 2 OEM Nav systems....our 2016 Honda Odyssey and my 2017 Tacoma. Both my wife and I MUCH prefer the Tacoma's NAV system to the Honda's from a user friendliness standpoint. As for accuracy, both have been fine and generally accurate.

I use my Nav all the time and have never had an issue, Its super easy to enter an address because its completes it as you are typing. My only minor complaint is that when you are searching for places (restaurants, gas..etc) you cant view the results on a map.

I use Waze daily. It's great for commuting because it's crowd-sourced data and warns you of hazards, traffic, and police.

I use Google Maps when I want to research POI's and places to go. Much better searchability than Waze or in-dash.

That said, I have the "crap" nav in-dash and it's saved my bacon a few times, when I go without cell service, or when my phone is dead. Sucks you can't input while moving, but there's mods for that. I also leave the display up on the split-screen because I can see the road up ahead, you can see what you're driving towards (curves, interchanges, street names, exits, etc.)

    They both serve a purpose.

The factory nav in my '15 jku looked like something out of the 90's (slow and low res), but it did surprisingly have quite a few forest roads/orv routes for Michigan loaded in stock (certainly not all of them, but quite a few). The one in my '16 trd or seems miles ahead of that one... but was disappointed to find that it does not.

I think that many that enjoy using the built in nav system have never used a truly great built in system like Android Auto. Way more intuitive, doesn't completely lock you out when you are driving, voice commands that make sense. Just saving my pennies until I can get rid of Entune.
