Navagation chip question

Does Toyota upgrade the chip after a certain time. I have a Mazda MX5 GTRF that has the chip Navigation and they will change out the chip every two years free. BMW and GM Nav. is $139 a year from Sirius XM , thank goodness Japanese cars have a free chip.

 

Nope. You have to pay to upgrade.

The best tip that I heard was to eject the card and note the version. Find out what the current version is, then search ebay or whatever for a used card that is one version old.

The software is locked to the serial number of the card, so there are no easy options for copying the data.

 

Not free, but they do update about once a year or so.

 

Google maps updates one a week on the iPad.

Well, that answers my question. Was curious if you could copy these cards (I own two Toyotas). That explains why you don't see copies on ebay or Amazon.

 

It does suck when they really don't do much to the data and we get it all basically for free with google maps or whatever.
