You can camp on the outside. That's freeman park. I love it there.

No beach camping allowed anywhere on the Cape Hatteras section of the Outer Banks (Nags Head to Ocracoke). Cape Lookout NS, which includes Portsmouth Island (next island south of Ocracoke) and South Core Banks does allow dispersed beach front camping. There are no permanent inhabitants on either island and limited amenities but you will find some of the most pristine beach on the east coast.

There are ferry services out of Atlantic to Portsmouth and from Davis to South Core. Fee is around $75 round trip plus a charge for each person.
The Park Service has 15-20 'rustic' cabins on each island with bunk beds, john/shower and kitchen if you don't want to camp.

    Our campsite on Portsmouth[IMG]

    The ferry is pretty basic

Beach is generally empty except during fall fishing season

How is camping out on the beach like that? I would assume it would be hard to sleep, but I have a hard time sleeping in too much heat. How was it for you?

Unless rain is probable we sleep with the fly off the tent and there's almost always a good breeze so heat isn't normally an issue at night. The screen room is a must during the day for relief from the sun and when the greenheads get bad.

We're heading back over on the 13th for the new Tacoma's first visit but will be in the cabins as some non-camping family members are along. Come on down.

I camped on the beach over near the Cape Lookout light house several years ago. It was all good until we woke up in the middle of the night being eaten alive by insects. I am not sure how they got in the tent and why they felt like OFF was a nice condiment but they tore us up. If I ever go back and camp on the beach I want to be up off the ground, probably in the bed of my truck.

Ah I got ya. I guess there would be a good breeze at night from the ocean. I'd love to try it some day.

Bed of the truck wouldn't be bad, I'd just make sure you had something to be able to keep the bugs out with there as well.
