I remember before I ever went off roading I took the nerf bars off the truck and ate shit the next morning getting out of my truck half awake.
Getting skids/sliders was one of my best investments. The bedslide the next then the protestor pusher on the front of the truck.

It's also good when you have sliders and they are wet and you slide off of them and bust your shins. Happens to me all the time getting the Giblets in and out of my truck.

I had an incident at a gas station on Sunday when I was cruising around with @tacobell007. I slipped on a sheet of ice getting out of the truck and instead of trying to prevent landing on my ass I ducked to avoid smashing my head on the slider as I fell out of the truck. I was contemplating putting some sort of grip tape on the slider or buying some paint that could act like a rough surface to step on...

I've got the grip tape from home Depot that's used for stairs. Its comes in like 10ft rolls at maybe 3" wide. It's about perfect. Mine came off in a few places from use and I've been too lazy to re-apply.

It's also good for putting on the leading faces of the legs to help mitigate them from having the paint sandblasted off during the winter.

Hm.. that's actually a really good idea. I wonder how well it would stick against the Duplicolor Bed Coating I have them on it right now.

It's pretty damn tackey. My sliders are just rattle canned and it sticks really well. It peels off eventually, but it'll take 1.5 years +. And it's cheap so it doesn't really matter if it does, just slap some more on.

Sounds like I will have to join you guys on some runs this year! I am going to add a few of the skid plates, and I don't have any sliders yet, but as I see how much dirt is kicking up on the side of my truck, I think I need some for protection from that. With bigger tires I am guessing the front mud flaps won't fit!

Just had to run out and tow the sander out of a ditch in my driveway. I have to say the taco didn't do much for the gmc 2500 with a sander full in the bed, but it did just enough to get him out!

And while I was doing that UPS dropped off my rubber bed mat! First "mod" complete

Sliders are just about a must here in New England if you want to wheel. They won't do anything to protect the side of the truck from dirt though.

With the ones I had on my ford it seemed like they took a decent amount of mud that would have otherwise covered the truck, I don't think they are a mud flap, but they might help a tiny bit? Let a man dream here!

I'm talking about sliders (rock rails) not steps. They are made from steel tubing and can take the full weight of the truck. Regular tube steps crumple when you hit a rock with them, put any load on them. Sliders can be used for steps depending on configuration, however they are typically tucked much higher to the body so they aren't great as a step, especially if you're shorter.

You could get fill plates for them which might give a little protection but not much

It always helps to check out someone's setup who's done it before! I'm new to Toyotas completely so a lot of the things I am used too are different. Will have to meet up at some point for sure.

Got a busy weekend hosting a father daughter dance (if any of you guys have daughters and live near Hancock, LMK) but I'm usually fairly open. How close by are you?
