Question for the guys committed to do this run.
What tires model, size are you running?
    Amount of lift?
Do you have sliders and would you do this trail without them?

Need a run like this and would like to be setup right for it.

My build starts with a 1st gen that currently is sitting on a 2” lift (Bilstein), Toyota elocker rear and Detroit truetrac font, manual hubs. Front recovery points are on a high mount class 2 in the front bumper.
    Appreciate the help.

I’m in a 2019 TRD OR (manual/rear locker/no crawl control) with 2”OME full kit, 285/70/17 falken wildpeak AT’s, no aftermarket armor.
My buddy who is joining has a 2009 4Runner with factory tcase locker, no aftermarket armor, either 2 or 3” lift, and the same tires as me.

as for running without armor, if you are comfortable with your truck and know it’s limits, and when within those limits, you should be okay. If you aren’t experienced or familiar with how your truck handles off road, or are less confident in your abilities, it’s a place to work up to a little bit.

Id recommend sliders and skids to start. I run 35s, 5.29s, and locked front and rear with full armor and scrub frame and sliders on some breakovers. If youre taking the go arounds you would be find

I'd be interested, its just over an hour from my place. How rough is MA Bell compared to something like Sucker Pond? Videos online look like a lot of serious crawling.

Factory locker, sliders, aftermarket skid, 32' Duratracs, no lift. Moderately experienced driver.

Depends on the lines you take, the go arounds are probably on par, the main lines would be like going on the tall roller coaster while sucker pond is the kiddie coaster. Its also a short trail

    Nice looking setups.
Planning to take the go arounds until it's broken in a bit more.
I am going to look at your rides for ideas.
Thanks Drew and Andrew for the info.

Like people have said, I think it’s all about knowing your vehicle and gaining experience with it. As with many things in life, “discretion is the better part of valor.”

The worst thing you can do is to be cavalier about an obstacle and “just go for it.” Our trucks have long wheelbases and the breakover angle is a weak point.

I’d also recommend taking a course in off-roading. There’s a place in East Haddam, CT called Overland Experts. They have a full day training that works out to be pretty economical if you can get a group of 6 people together.

BTW, my truck has a 2” lift, lockers front & rear, dual transfer cases and 34” KM3’s. So it’s pretty capable, but it’s a manual tranny and I’m still on the learning curve with that.

I’ve been lucky enough to get out for 8 days of wheeling so far this year. I feel like you never stop learning when it comes to wheeling.

I’ll second this. I signed my fiancée up for a class at Team O’Neill for her birthday last year. We took her JK Rubicon up to their rally school in New Hampshire and did their TrailCraft class. It was perfect for her Jeep (2.5” lift and 35” wildpeak ATs) and we both learned a bunch. Think it was 300 bucks for a 4 hour class.

I think OEX is like $1500 for 6 people for 8 hours.

I never really understood paying to take your truck out unless youre in an NEA club. Biggest thing is seat time and going to trails that will challenge you with people that know the trails and arent total dicks. I learned a lot about what my truck will do once locked front and rear by following my buddy with a way more built rig than mine and him just telling me the lines to take and then doing them over and over again

I'm not locked but that's been the way I've been learning too. Started bone stock, went to tires, then some armor, now the lift, and I've been wheeling it the whole time. I like to think I get a little bit better every trip and its very valuable to me to see what gets easier with each mod, and where my new limit is

Agree that seat time is the most important thing. Just saying, OEX and guys like them literally wheel 3-4x per week. They drive all kinds of rigs (well, mostly Yotas and Jeeps, but also some Defenders). Most of their clients are military special forces, utility or forest dept. Fun to learn about different strategies and tactics from the pros!

I'm the same way, i definitely know my truck a lot better than I did before and what it will do. The biggest thing that holds me back now is ground clearance and the approach and departure angles

Yea I'm sure I could pick up some pointers but I learn best by doing and messing up and then correcting it for the next time. Old Florida Rd for me was a good example of that since I struggled the first time and barely had any set backs the second time
