So my brothers is blown and we're trying to find one for the cheapest. Or if someone has one that's awesome, the front one that connects to the engine! Any help or direction is greatly appreciated

Just a FYI there is no such thing as a mass manufactured V4 engine, they were rare and only found in few cars. You're thinking of the Inline 4.

Check the 1st Gen Marketplace section there's a ton of part outs.

Not really intelligent on this topic haha, could tell me exactly what I should search, isn't it 2.4l v4 2wd front catalytic converter? Does it matter if it's 4wd or not?

The biggest difference will be engine types. 1st Generation Tacomas came with three different engine choices - the 2.4l Inline 4 (142 HP), 2.7l Inline 4 (150 HP), and 3.4l V6 (190 HP). The exhaust will be different on the 3.4l V6 - but I'm almost certain you can use a 2.7l exhaust on a 2.4l. The difference of the engines was the increased (bore?) on the 2.7l allowing for the extra 8 HP and extra 14 ft lb of torque - but they're the exact same engine. You only found the 2.4l engines on the 5 Lug trucks - which I presume you have.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but you can use any 2.4l or 2.7l catalytic converter. Toyota actually manufactured Tacomas specifically spec'd for sale in California - don't know if that would make any difference. The reason is that California is strict on emissions and emissions systems.

I actually had a buddy who had an '04 Double Cab that lived in Tracy, CA (which is a little shady) and had his cat. converter stolen three times.

If you are getting a code for a bad cat, and are 100% sure you have a bad cat, I highly recommend that you get a URD o2 simulator... They plug and play in line with your rear o2 sensor. I've had one on my 2rz for almost 8 years now...

Would that show up on a SMOG test and inspection? The reason I ask is because OP is from Cali and they're super anal about emissions testing here.

Did you just eliminate your cat entirely?

No, I left mine in place. But if they are going to be sampling the exhaust somehow, it will fail

Well it looks like you're in California, you would most certainly fail the SMOG check if you were missing the catalytic converter.

If you're never going to drive it on a public road you don't actually need the exhaust at all, it's just there for emissions and noise reduction.
