Anybody have some good basket ideas? Racks rated for 100lb and 45in fixed crossbar spread. Basket weighing 40lb and costing less than $500 including extension would be ideal.

Post #1 for a cheap basket with modified hardware and
Post #18 for a $450 basket that fits the OEM racks out of the box.

If you want to use an extension pretty much every basket works, it all comes down to how well they handle the elements.
For $100 you get a basket that will rust away in a year or so, $200 you get a basket that if you rust inhibitor inside the tubes will last years, and $400 you should (in theory) have a basket that will last years with no maintenance just sitting on your roof exposed to the elements. Over $400 the baskets start either becoming more heavy duty for large loads or made out of aluminum which stands up to the elements better.

Over the years I've used everything from cheap Harbor Freight baskets, which I took off whenever not in use because when they got wet it would piss rust water everywhere. To using a Yakima Load Warrior which I could leave mounted all year even through the harsh winters and rain storms with no issues arising.
Right now I'm using a Rola Vortex basket that I sprayed all the tube insides with Fluid Film and I will see how long it lasts just leaving it on my roof all the time.
