We generally love lifting around here.

    …we just don’t recommend buying someone else’s work…

We just bought a VW Tiguan SE R-Line for 31,xxx brandy new. As others have mentioned, you can co ALOT better for the 31k, new Subie Forester. Great car, very safe, reliable, can haul a bunch-o shit (we've had three), and a beast in the shitty weather.

Thanks for all of the input here - it really helped in explaining to my daughter why that truck might not be the best idea. I didn't have the greatest feeling about it to begin with and after all the feedback here I was really not onboard with it at all and she agreed. We ended up with a new king-cab Frontier that was being closed out for just a few thousand more than the Tacoma would have cost. Maybe not quite as nice as a Tacoma and a touch smaller, but I love having a warranty and knowing that it hasn't been mis-treated. Once she gets out of college she can trade the Frontier in for a new Tacoma or whatever else she wants. Thanks again!

College transportation to me = Toyota Corolla!

I had an 1800cc VW in my day, but it sat unused mostly while at college except for travel, and fun drives. I biked everywhere in town most of the time - because it was a great option, very doable, I enjoyed my bike which I could ride all the way into the classroom! likely not allowed these days (ah the good ol' days!) and with a bike, I did not have to bother with parking.

BUT OTOH, A truck maybe a great option for your daughter. I hope she enjoys some adventures in the new truck - spending time camping and enjoying the outdoors. (She should get a bike too!)

She has a bike - except it’s a mountain bike. She’s pretty active including biking, skiing a various water sports so the truck will be super useful. I was suggesting a Subaru Crosstrek to her as that is what my other daughter has but she really wanted a truck. Hopefully we are good to go with all three of my kids and their next vehicles will all be on them.

With a college daughter driving 700 miles to school, going New is a smart move.

With all the discussion on vehicle to drive to college, to wrap up let us know what she plans as her major. My daughter is an architect but also got a business degree.

    great choice!
Talking it out with her, teaching her to make a better financial decisions, is even better! There would be no reason to pay nearly the same amount of money for an eight year old truck out of warranty.

The new Frontier is a carbon copy of the 3G. Good choice.

Well, she is only finishing up her freshmen year so a lot can change. Currently she is thinking something in the engineering direction - she is pretty good at math and science. But she has also floated the idea of culinary school as she likes to be active and has a tough time sitting still. Engineering would have a much bigger payout of course and I think provide for an easier life down the road and it is tough to make it big in the culinary world. Ultimately though I just hope she finds something she is passionate about and will be happy doing.

My daughter got married, had a baby, quit her job, and is now managing her husband‘s construction business.

Do not join the culinary world. Unless you enjoy never having your own time, and the occasional kickback of some tasty food.

Not commenting on the quality of Nissan, but ... the first issue she has that would be significant $$ she will be glad to have the warranty for the next few years.
