This game is probably the reason I have driven MT's all my life.

I have the MT. It is great that it is a 6 speed and that Toyota offers it. I live in the mountains and I love the rpm speed control uphill and the engine braking control downhill that I get from a manual.

But, it kills the gas milage, and it is very unrefined. I grew up driving 4 speed Ford's from the 70's and 80's. All were easier to shift and feather the clutch out than the Tacoma. The Taco's gearbox is really sticky feeling through the synchros and after 10,000 miles, I find that I have still have to concentrate on letting the clutch out real slow to drive it smoothly.

I'm keeping the MT, but this is probably my last MT.

Try Redline MT-90 and the ADM. The MT-90 really helps with the syncros and the ADM allows the engagement to truly follow your foot.

Also, there is a Motorcraft fluid out there that is said to be on-par or better than the MT-90.

you can fix that hesitation, bring more torque and throttle control, and take all the power that surges at 3500 down into the lower rev range. it's your hardware, you bought and own it. if you want it to be optimal that is available: OVT for MT.

The fact that it forced you to use the clutch, unlike Hard Drivin' was unreal at the time. I would love to take a spin in that today.

This is my 3rd manual transmission taco, I ordered this one and wouldn’t not accept an auto.

I drive a 16 TRD Sport access cab V6 Auto, two wheel drive ,I simply wanted exactly the same thing with a manual shift. Living in the Dallas/FortWorth area you would think a dealer somewhere hear would have one,
none of the dealers even offered to order one, No One here stocks one, or is even interested in getting it for me.
Good Luck to you sir, I have given up

I loved that game so much. 75% of the time I would run into the grass and crack my windshield within the first 10 seconds, but was still happy to keep feeding it money.

I’m skeptical whether I should buy a 2020 MT then. Seems like I can walk out of a dealership paying around $5k out of pocket for a new one if I buy a 2019, or $2000 if I buy a used 2018.

You gotta figure out what you want? Myself, I wanted pre-TSS, non-Tech, and non-Prem. So, it was a 2017 for me. If you want a 2018 or 2019, the updates on the 2020 look pretty good? You may have to wait a bit for a run of MTs though.

From what I hear the Ford Motorcraft XT-M5 (?) is the absolute best there is hands down, but that shit is expensive at roughly $24 a quart online. Redline MT90 ain't cheap either but it's what $12 or $13 a quart?

I use MT90 myself in the manual trans, everywhere else on the truck I just use regular run of the mill gear oil but the transmission is where you can really tell the difference with better stuff.

One of these days I might try the XTM5 just to see what it's about

edit - shit I thought this was the manual transmission BS thread lol...carry on

You must be low on fluids or some other issue going on. Shifting is pretty smooth compared to most other cars I’ve driven. And definitely better than old clunkers.

Try the dealership to see if they will replace or top off the MT fluid.

Buying a new Tacoma is cheaper here in the PNW than used. The URD short-shifter I had in my 5spd AC 4cyl was sweet, and if I go Tacoma again it will be manual and the short-throw in it.

I have a short attention span also, so we are disabled and need a manual transmission to live. If Toyota cared they'd make sure we have what we need.
I've never owned a vehicle with an auto transmissions and I hope I'm never forced to.

    I’d go $5k 2019. $3k isn’t worth 10k+ miles to me.

    BS away! :D

The main reason that I went with MT-90 was a slight problem getting into 1st at a stop. Redline was a known fix for this on other MTs that we had. Also, @Omar RVA 's UOA on the OEM fluid was a little disappointing.

Yeah. I used whatever synthetic gear lube on the diffs. I did use Ravenol that is labeled for the T case spec. VOAs on it show that it falls a bit short compared to the expensive Toyota stuff.

I agree the MT is really good. I just needed a small bit of help.

Same here. It took me way too long and way too many $$ to actually complete a lap. I left the arcade feeling relaxed every time though.

Nothing really matched it until Forza and Gran Turismo launched. Someday, I hope to have a driving wheel / shifter / pedal setup.
