    are you talking about this?

    well this controls EVERYTHING.

in the top left corner the "M" is your shooting mode....i have in manual
to the right of it, is your shutter speed. i have it set to 1/250th of a second. on the to right corner is your F Stop/Aperture (theyre the same thing) i have mine set to F4. in the bottom left corner thats your picture file type. mine is set to raw. you have your battery life. the [788] is how many photos you have left on your card. and on the very bottom is your white balance i have mine set to "A" for auto....

    hope this helps?

Yeah thanks Panda, thats what I was talking about. I have seen that on a couple of cameras but didn't know what it was. How come it isn't on the new ones I have played with?? Also, is that the newest Nikon you just bought? I saw your thread a couple of days ago where you got a new one.

The cheaper cameras (consumer models) don't have them. The prosumer and pro models do

FWIW for a really good point shoot i opted to get canon powershot SX20IS

    it has .5mm-100mm

    1:2.8-5.7

really tough camera. gets beat on, on trail runs and still takes really clean pictures with no problems. very user friendly and shoots 1080p HD video.

Good camera if you arent 100% serious and you can still mess with Fstop/aperture, shutter speed, iso, etc.

I was told same guts as one of the rebel but doesnt have removable lense. not as flexible but very good knock around...

Macro is awesome for a point and shoot too...

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on that. On the higher end body's we use the screen on the top of the camera because the LCD just eats up battery life and you have to hit a button to see the shooting info on the LCD anyway. It's a great feature and I think all DSLR's should have something like it.

And I know my camera so well I just use the view finder when changing my settings. I mean it's only shutter,Aperture,ISO & WB you need to change for the most part.

Well Im going today to look at the cameras again. Ill play with both adequately again. Hopefully ill get a better feel for them today. My mom found one that comes with two lenses, the 18-55 and a 75-300 lens. What will the 75-300 lens be used for? Like what kind of shots?

Telephoto shots where you can't get that close to your subject. you might be better off buying a body and one good lens I bought a kit when I bought my first DSLR and sold the kit lenses within 6 months.

Just buy a great lens and a body you like and you will be much happier.

I see your going to Cannon route seeing how Nikon don't make a 75mm-300mm

Well yes that one is the Canon Rebel that the 75 comes with. My mom found it at Sam's Club and it was 599 for two lenses 2 memory cards and all charger cables etc. Im gonna go check it out today.

Im really confused, I felt the Canon was easier to operate but you all say that Nikon is more user friendly. Is there any major component on the Nikon that will stand out to me more?

I went with a simple d40x as my first DSLR. I think it's a good starter camera and probably reasonably cheap now, they are a little old, but it's the upgraded version of the d40 and works really well.

    edit: Nikon D40x, that is...

Ok went and played with them again, still falling in love. Sam's didn't have Nikons to play with so I'm going to go to Best Buy again tomorrow to look at them.

Another question I know yall said that the ones without the screen on top is a consumer grade? What is the difference? Would I notice it in quality of the pictures?

Difference vary by manufacturer and model but the consumer models will have less bell and whistles, the top display screen being one of them but you probably wont notice a difference in IQ between a good consumer model and the next step up. Remember its the glass that makes the big difference

Got ya got ya. I gotta remember to keep that in mind. Lenses are a powerful effect in this game. Alright thanks. Do they sell the higher quality or stores? Or do you have to buy them off the websites??
