Hello to all. Just bought a 2016 Tacoma TRD Offroad with a 5 foot bed. I need an inexpensive tonneau cover (tri-fold is preferable) and was wondering who on this forum has had one on their truck for awhile and is happy with it? Security is not a big issue (in other words, "soft" is fine) and 90+% of the time the truck will be parked under a carport out of the sun and rain.

American Tonneau and TonnoPro are two I've looked at. Any experiences, good or bad, or other advice would be appreciated.

I have had a Extang Black Max since 2007 put it on my 2010, 2013 and now my 2016. I just got a new cover for it because the old one looked a little worn and started to crack. At a cost of 99.00. the frame work is the same. Just needed longer clamp screws and changed the weather strip. Fit right on with no leaks. The soft covers are hard to put on when it is cold out. So I don't take mine off in the winter.

Not everyone has that kind of money to blow on a retractable tonneau cover.

Although I have a Leer Trilogy folding hardtop on the way, my Extang Black Max soft top is now 15 years old and still holding up quite well. However, it did live in garage for 11 of those years.

How much are you looking to spend? I’m selling my factory tri-fold cover from my 2016 short bed.

Shoot me a message if you’re interested. Not sure what shipping would cost but I’m pretty sure we could work something out.

After doing some research and actually put some thought on what I really needed a tonneau cover for, I ended up buying the Smart Cover by Smittybilt. So far I have been very happy with it and it is getting the job done. It's a nice tri-fold for around $300 and is a no brainer for install. This will cover your bed and is very easy to take off when needed. The cover can be taken off in less than 5 minutes and can be stored in the bag that it comes with. Smittybilt also throws in a bed net as a nice little bonus. The material is very durable and comes in a matte finish. It saved me $1,400 from my original tonneau cover budget. Now I can spend that $1,400 on other mods:thumbsup:

I know there are a ton of options out there but we have had great luck with Tyger Tri-fold covers on Amazon. They fit great, fold up easy, and the best thing is they come off fast and simple. They are $229 shipped so the price is tough to beat. Between family and friends we have them on four Tacos and one Silverado and everyone has been very happy. The downside would be security, someone could cut through it, but that was not a concern on mine for the way we use them. The LED light that comes with them is kind of a joke but it does work in a pinch. They also come with a storage bag but I've never used it. Also, I never thought I would like a cover. I haul too much tall stuff (bikes, tools, etc) and only bought it to keep luggage dry and out of sight on road trips. Turns out they are great to have a majority of the time and because they are so easy to remove it makes it a no brainer for a couple hundred bucks.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.
