Hey guys I need some advice. This weekend I decided to tackle replacement of my hubs on my recently purchased 08 4x4 Base Tacoma. Everything came apart smooth. The truck has very little rust. The problem I ran into was when I tried to install the new hub on the drivers side. The fitment on the cv axle splines is very tight. The only way to actually seat the would be to tighten the axle nut. The factory hub slid off the cv axle with very little effort. The new hubs are complete units I bought from a trusted member here on TW. I tried fitting both the new hubs on the same axle with the same results. The splines on the cv are clean with no burrs and have anti seize. My concern with driving the new hub via the axle nut is that the next time I need to remove a cv axle, they will be frozen to the hub and beating them out will possibly hurt the bearing. Also, how would I achieve proper torque on the axle nut if the cv shaft is literally press fit in the hub? I did attempt to set the new hubs by tightening the axle nut but it got pretty tight so I stopped and had to drive the cv back out of the hubs with a sledgehammer. I took a picture of the splines afterwards and you can see where the hub splines are interfering with the cv splines. The new hubs will slide on the cv effortlessly for about an inch then come to a stop.

The cv seems to be more of an interference fit in the new hubs rather than a slip fit.

Get a new CV or go 3rd world and grind down splines until it fits.

I don't think it's the cv that's causing the problem as the factory hub fits perfect. A new will most likely be a tight fit aswell. I did contemplate filing the splines but that seems like a crazy amount of work for this job.

I'm wondering if anyone else has run into this problem and also, is a slip fit necessary for proper axle nut torque and bearing preload?

Have you tried going back to the "trusted member here on TW" and asking if maybe you received a bad hub? He's pretty good on customer service.

I sent him a message and I'm sure he'll reply eventually. Seems like a pretty straight forward guy but also very busy sometimes. I thought I'd reach out to you guys and see what your thoughts are. Mainly curious if anyone has ever run into this situation before and what they did to remedy it. To me, it didn't feel right forcing the hub on the cv by tightening the axle nut.

I couldn't even get the hub on the cv shaft far enough to get the 4 bolts started. I also just read a post about the covers not fitting?

Thanks man. I've watched his video on the bearing install and quite a few other videos on the subject. Were you able to get your covers on?

If you clean the splined shaft down to bare metal with a wire brush and lube both the CV shaft and new hub liberally with a water resistant grease, the bolt-walking method will go smoothly.

Ok thank you. I will try cleaning the cv stub better before round 2. I do feel like this is a tolerance issue more than anything considering how easy it was to remove the factory unit.
