Clean the truck up real nice and go in there knowing what your truck is worth, how much you owe on it (if anything) and the lowest offer you will take on it. If you are trading it in you are already at a disadvantage b/c they have something you want not the other way around. Good luck to you and don't let them sucker into something you don't like.

Have you checked online book value sites (KBB, Nada, Edmunds) to see what your truck is hypothetically worth? I say hypothetically only because they are guides, not set in stone, numbers.

Dealers will let you trade in anything (almost) depending how bad you want something different, but prepare that trading in your 2WD more than likely may not be in your favor. Can you buy a 4WD beater and keep the 2WD as a daily driver? Seems like a better plan if you off road regularly.

Others here speak of conversions, you are almost out of warranty anyway....

It sucks driving something you do not like..... if you can take the hit moneywise or sell it privately first then buy....get what you want. Good luck.

Your best bet is to do as stated above, but sell it to a private party. If you have a Carmax, or similar where you live, take it there to get an udea of what a dealer would give you for it. Then, compare that to private party values and it'll give you the needed "wiggle room" to sell it quick. If you deal directly with a dealer, they will always low ball you. Even if you get close to your ideal number on the trade, they will make it up in the back end.

but the dealer likely will not even give you the bluebook trade value. i'd sell on the private market.

when i shopped around for my 09, i got a better deal at power toyota in tempe and i did check with big 2. big 2 is nice because of all the creature comforts in showroom, but price is price.

Yeah the dealers dont appraise according to KBB, they use how much it can get in auction which is way lower than kbb. private party will get you more. research how much the same truck goes for in your area and adjust your price from there. 4x4 FTW!!

    Olsen,

If you owe more than your truck is worth don't sell/trade. If you really want a 4x4 go buy a beater and make your 08' your daily driver.

If you owe less than its worth sell your truck private party, then use USAA car buying service and get a new 4x4 for a great price.

In my area, low mileage Toyota PU's are very rarely seen in classified ads. Nearly all I see are high mileage (>120k) models with hefty price tags.

I am betting you would get 6 or more offers within a day or two if you ran it. Run an ad with a photo, it will catch buyers attention. If not, your out $20.

Just a cleaning tip: cleaning the inside of the fenders/frame/axle underside makes a truck look years newer; after you spray it clean, COVER EVERYTHING on the underside with Low Gloss Armorall, this will make it look super clean and "blend" any missed or rough spots: spray it on! Use a whole bottle if you have to. Also, clean the wheels real good, get a rag and really get into all the cuts and curves, this also makes the truck appear to be in better condition.

Even though your truck is probably in excellent condition, making it look excellent can help to get the return you desire.
