I graduated from a little .22 LR and did the unthinkable by buying the following MONSTER (.50cal), followed by my more practical carry, my .45 ACP. I love both, but the 1911 is wonderful and at the same time heavy. However, I highly recommend the 1911, as it's very accurate and affordable to shoot. In regards to shooting through walls, the 500 will shoot through multiple buildings!

I got a Glock 22 in .40. Mostly because its my backup for hunting. Hogs/yotes/deer w/e. If I were to get another one it would be 9mm , because its so much cheaper to practice and shoot. It comes down to what feels comfortable , and what you and your wife can manage recoil wise.

    .45 ACP or 38 +p.
.380ACP or a 9mm/.40 nice guns. Funny thing after a freind had a shoot out in his shop (killed 1 of 3 ) he put his 9mm away and got a .45 like I told him a long time ago.
Put a .45 in the chest of the bad guy you dont have to wait for them to bleed out.
He purchased a XDM .45 it comes with clips & all the goodies at a great price.
I have a Kimber, I should say my fav is the kimber my other .45 all have there place.
My Ultra covert two is compact & I like the laser but with extras (mag's) $1800. The XDM is about $550.00 & comes with all the extras, holds more rounds. All I need is 8 :>)

I'll be honest with you...i'm not a fan of your line of thinking

the .45ACP is NOT the end-all be-all round that people think it is

I've PERSONALLY worked a case where a dude took multiple .45 rounds at less than 3 feet and survive...and i've assisted a case where a single 9mm ball round killed a man before we arrived on scene (I was first on scene and had less than 2min response time)...In fact, the very first dead body I saw was a dude who took a single .25 to the face...

I also do not like limiting myself in round count for the sake of a bigger number caliber

those things should NOT be deciding factors when choosing a pistol for protection

What should be the deciding factors are this
    1. Can you shoot it accurately under stress without the sights?
    2. Is it reliable?
    3. Is it reliable?
    4. Is it reliable?

I was looking at an HK45C some of the guys started carrying where I work, expensive and the double action trigger pull is LONG!! The single action pull isn't too shabby.

Another deciding factor for me was the magazine release, I'm so used to shooting guns with the standard mag release, that it would be a lot of muscle memory drills to retrain myself and still maintain proficiency with my gov't issued SIG P226.

I'm going to pick up the XDM 45 3.8" Compact...can't beat the price, and I enjoyed shooting the XDM 45 at the gun shop.

The comment about the 45 going through walls is incorrect, the smaller the caliber you have an increase in velocity. With that being said the 9mm will penetrate walls because its almost traveling 1/3 faster than a .45. Just something to think about. Also I have a Springfield XD 40, I like the XDM because of the magazine capacity but that came out after. Get hydroshocks which are similar to hollow points, make sure you shoot a mag or two of the home protection rounds just to make sure your gun likes it..

FWIW .. I tend to agree, especially on the reliability issue ..... and I love that 1911 as a military side arm.

With that said ... I would choose a 9mm with 15 rounds over a 7 round .45 ACP. There is something to be said for "number of effective rounds on target". ...

"What about the new S&W .50 caliber revolver?"It was disqualified, because Dr. Hatcher's formula falls apart when the endpoint is mist.

Agreed. Reliability and simplicity are your best friends under stress. I trained on the Glock, am familiar with it, and I know it will work when it has to. Frangible rounds will minimize over-penetration.
