Hi all, I'm trying to put together an upgrade list for my new Tacoma that I'm receiving in about 2 weeks. I'm not new to the world of audio, but I don't have any experience with car audio so I'm looking for some input and opinions.

My overall goals are to keep it simple and clean to install, and mid-range in terms of price. I am a bass-head so down the road I intend to add a sub (probably a Stealthbox) + a standalone amp, but initially I'll just stick to upgrading the forward speakers/amp.

The speakers I have in mind are the Focal PS 165V1 component kit, and the amp is the Kicker Key 200.4. I figure I could run the Key in bi-amp mode to drive the Focals and handle crossover, as opposed to using the included passive crossovers. Then I would just leave the stock rear speakers connected directly to the HU as I only need a bit of rear fill. Would this setup work fine?

Also, I'm not sure how the tweeters are wired - would I need to run new wiring up to the new tweeters to have the amp set crossover or could I just use the existing wiring with a harness adapter?

    Thanks!

You will have to bypass the factory wiring to biamplify the front speakers. They are connected in parallel at the tweeter.

I’d just disconnect the rear speakers. They sound like ass with the factory heat unit and barely have any volume. To get the most of your setup, like the poster above said, you’ll need to run new wire to the tweeters and front door speakers. Are you going to cut the factory harness or buy a harness?

don't know how easy/difficult to run new wires to door speakers, but if you have Metra's tweeter harness. one could terminate the signal wires on the metra end that's feeds the tweeter/front door and tap into the metra door speaker wires? Then run the new door wires off the Metra connector and new tweeter wires to the amp?

    Nothing major
I personally wouldn’t go to a smaller door mid bass, there are good sets that keep the 6x9 in there. I also personally wouldn’t just throw a tweeter in the dash either though.

I ran new speaker wire everywhere, the door jams aren’t bad to get through.

Noted in regards to the rear speakers. From what I've read running new wire to the tweeters is a pain in the ass and may require unbolting the entire dash, so I think I would go with @pochoboy 's idea but instead use the original wiring harness for the tweeters and then run new wires to the door speakers.

Unfortunately (for me at least) Focal doesn't make 6x9 sets, but you bring up a good point - I may end up going with one of these 6x9 kits from Infinity or Alpine. What's wrong with throwing a new tweeter in the dash though? I don't really want to make new holes in the pillars/door panels, and I would think the stock dash position is still better than a coax tweeter pointing at your ankles.
