I have a 99 taco with the v6 and auto trans. With manual hubs. I posted awhile back about a bad noise I was hearimg when I would get the fwd under a load. I jacked all four wheels up and had someone sit I'm the truck to work the gas and brake while I listened and looked. The only way I can get it to make this noise is when I get the wheels up to speed and quickly hit the brakes stopping the tires while the drive is still under power. The horrible noise I was hearing was I'm fact from the transfer case and the pinging noise I was hearing was the rear drive shaft, since its hollow any grinding noise from the transfer case resulted in it echoing through the drive shaft. My question is. Can you replace the sprockets and chains inside? I'm assuming my chain has stretched and I figure I've ate up the sprockets too. I will be doing the work myself and have access to a good shop. Trying to do this the cheapest route possible. Any help appreciated.

You should have your transfer case rebuilt that's the only solution I can think of.

If it has been slipping for awhile,,you have probably circulated metal chips thru out.

Full tear down and inspection of all components and make a parts list on what you find and need. Both in and out bearings and seals, case gaskets, ect,,to start off with,,then whatever else you need when you get inside.

Your cheap budget kinda goes out the window when you do something like this. You might find that everything is trash inside minus a few small pieces, so be prepared for a junkyard run.

Thanks all. I ordered that off of eBay. Priced the chain alone through the deal and was like 600 bucks. I plan on tearing it down somewhat and replacing seals and gaskets. Hopefully nothing else too major. I kinda am starting to doubt it though. There is a lot of components inside that tcase.

What did the fluid look like, and what kind of noises did it make in 4wd on all 4's under power? How much play is in the f/r outputs? How are your u joints and rear cv?

One year when we went Elk hunting we drove a old Suburban that had a slipping chain. A couple steep grades with some hard chain slips was all it took to strand us waay out there. It obliterated the teeth off of the gears and reduced the chain to a cheap bunjie. Little did I know that the t-case was bad,,or I would have drove myself.

Was reported that big shavings and chunks were found when the case was split. It was ugly I guess.

Once you hear those cases clunking that chain,,park it asap and fix, or baby it home, or be towed. You'll stand a better chance at saving money.

So long as the first indications look good, I would just run that ebay case first before splitting it open. Fresh oil and let it rip.

I have the FSM for my truck, I've read over the transfer case components list and the seals I will need to replace once I have it tore down even got the Toyota fipg gasket maker. My ujoints and CV joints are all good. Its definitely coming from the tcase. Plan on breaking it down this weekend and going through it really good to make sure I get all of the metal shavings/chunks out. When I had all 4 wheels jacked up and had it in Fwd it doesn't make a sound unless I apply heavy braking to slow down the wheels before the drive train can slow down. I plan on taking the oil pump apart as well and Checking it for metal and smooth operation. This should be interesting to say the least.
