I would replace anything that shows that much wear but I am sometimes overly cautious.

I’m gonna take the heads off soon. If the heads are still within allowed tolerance I’ll probably fix it. If not I’m gonna find a used engine.

Does anyone know of a resource to check engine year compatibility, I would like to put in a newer model year if possible. Truck is an 05.

    whoops. disregard previous answer.

Yes the 2005 had a factory screwup in the HG. No wonder this happened.

Pretty sure you have 'til VVT changed to a diff. intelligence. Any junkyard will know. It even says on the top what generation it is.

Seems like you have a choice of 05-10, maybe 11.

Definitely look away from 05 early 06 unless you find one after the improved HG design. Later '06's.

You want single VVTi, not dual.

Probably not too many people here know much about Tundra motors. However, this is what I found. car-part.com is usually pretty good for determining parts interchange. When you punch in '05 Tundra 4.0 engine, a whole bunch of '05 and '06 Tundra engines pop up, but no other model and nothing newer. When you punch in '05 Tacoma, '05-'11 Tacoma engines pop up. It's well known that you can swap a '12-'15 Taco 4.0 into a '05-'11 Taco, by simply removing the air injection stuff. So, what's different about the '05-'06 Tundra 4.0? Don't know.

    Yea, I'ma crawfish on this.

I know you can and should find a newer one. Pretty sure to '11 at least.

I couldn't find photos of my cam bearing caps or whatever they're called. Here's a photo of the cams. I'd say yours look worse, but it could be as simple as different lighting conditions for the photos.

    cams.jpg

I hope you're making progress on the head removal. I definitely recommend examining the oil and taking the heads/cams/etc to a shop for inspection before throwing in the towel on this engine. Maybe also the front timing cover -- look for signs of excessive wear on the oil pump. Was there a lot of sludge in the valve area?

If the oil is clean, heads are straight, and wear is normal... then you can put the engine back together with the new head gasket, and it will be as good as any other 1GR out there. The '05 design defect was limited to the head gasket itself, and your new head gasket is the same as used in the '07-ups. Even if you decide your engine isn't worth repairing, since you already have the gasket kit and tools, I wouldn't shy away from a good deal on a lower mileage '05 or '06 junkyard engine and just swap the HG before you drop it in. It's probably not a hard job if you're starting with a long block on a pallet... although I've never personally swapped an engine or worked on one outside of the engine bay.

Oh, and if the wear is superficial, you can carefully polish out the rough areas with a fine polishing compound or maybe emery cloth, and that might help reduce the future rate of wear.

Good luck, and let us know what happens.

Overfilled oil can damage your engine just like low oil can. With wet sump if your oil is too high the crank churns up the oil and foams it... foam doesn't form an oil film and your more likely to suck it up and burn the foam/oil.

The thing is that this engine already has 330k miles and the head gaskets have already been replaced once before. I can see the paint marks on the timing chain and head bolts, the VVT, crank and idler sprockets are below the minimum diameter and a new chain will be needed too. A valve grind kit, new timing chain and sprocket kit, and 2 new VVT cam sprockets is close to $1000. I found a used 70k mile 08 Taco engine for $2k yesterday. I will receive the head bolt driver tomorrow, I can still remove the head to disillusion myself.

Oops I missed the updates regarding engine age and prior repairs. There's still a chance, but I would probably also be shopping for an engine. Hope you have some recourse against the entity you bought it from.

If you have time to shop you may stumble upon an engine for cheap(er).

I used to go to 'the big city' to get them.

God willing I’ll get an engine. Found a decent 08 4.0 yesterday for $2k. I’m probably still gonna take the head off when I get the head bolt driver, prob tomorrow. Just to show you guys.

Have you figured out if the Taco motor will work in the Tundra?

I’m sure it will. I referred to @Torspd and @mightytacoman for info. All vehicles with 5th digit “U” in the VIN use the same engine. The engines for 05-11 Tacos are the same mechanically as my Tundra motor and the ECM and wire harnesses are plug and play. Only 03-04 in the 4runners will have an issue because they use an older style cam phaser and CPS sensor package. On these motors, would require transferring over the newer cam phasers.

Don’t risk an 04-2006 engine. There where a lot of blown head gaskets.

The cams have no shells there really is no fix for that except to replace the heads and cams.

Have you considered looking for a whole wrote off truck. You pay a little more but you have other parts to use if anything else comes up in your repairs.
