Are you a bass head , you want to be heard ? Or do you want something nice and clear with a nice bump to it?

I would go with a round speaker vs a 6x9 for better sound reproduction. You aren't gonna get awesome bass out of door speakers anyways unless you spend more.

Try the SubX vender on here he may have something or be able to make you one. I'm thinking of getting one that sits in the middle of the rear seat and extends down and firing towards the floor using a Kicker L7. Like so just with my DB cab.

You do have some clue as to how sound reproduction, specifically bass, works, right? With the whole air movement and what not? And that cone area directly affects air movement?

If you have a 6.5" and a 6x9" speaker with the same specs, and the same power, in the same install - the by9 WILL be louder, specifically at lower frequencies.

Cone area is not the only deciding factor in the bass reproduction, but it does play a substantial roll.

FYI - cone area of a 6x9 is about the same as an 8" driver, or about 50-60% more area than a 6.5" driver.

While this can be true, in the type of install/quality of equipment he is going for, not an issue.

Door treatment and gear will be able to get solid bass out of door speakers. But spending more time, and money on install is definitely the way to go. And generally, at this price you are correct.

Make it yourself. Or contact Marv, or a local shop.

And yes, custom enclosures are pretty expensive.

The guy that I was using the picture for as a reference, SubX vender, makes them for 100 I believe. I've got a friend who will make me one for about 50.

In your 1st gen there really isn't enough room to put in 2 decent 12's unless they are shallow mounts. We only have about 7" on the bottom and about 3" on the top of the rear seat to play with. You'd have to build either a blow through box or just a box and set it on the rear seats.

You are right, let's talk him into getting some 5.25" speakers instead of those 6.5's. Just because the 6.5's have a little more cone area doesn't mean they will play louder or have more bass.

Look at the OP's question. He doesn't want a science lesson, he wants a practical guide to installing a good system on a budget. As he doesn't want a sub, the extra cone area of a 6x9 will, in most cases, reproduce deeper, louder midbass.

Maybe instead of just shooting down other peoples input you can give a lesson on the Thiele/Small parameters that you so obviously have a profound understanding of. Or would you like me to tell him that he needs a Sundown amp, and all his problems will go away?

I guess with a certain set of parameters, it may not be louder. In real world applications, with limited power (combined with the higher efficiency generally found in the equivalent by9) , a fairly basic install, and basic principals of sound, it will be louder, and will produce better low frequencies than the smaller speaker.

    LOL.

Taking the middle paragraph into consideration, OP, please remember that a small investment of time and a few dollars in materials spent on sealing the door and some sound deadening will go a long way to helping the sound. On the cheap side, throw a bit on the outer door skin, and seal off the holes on the inner door skin.

Replace the stocks in the doors, I would go with some 6x9's. And for a good base i'd go with a 10" sub, you would be suprised how much a sub improves sound quality. I put a 10 in my reg cab with stock speackers in the door and it sounded great. But i eventually replaced the door speakers
