So I’ve got a 03 4WD with 87k miles. Back in May 2019, I replaced all four corners with 4600s.

Over the last year, being stuck at home has made me rethink the utility of my truck. I’ve decided that I want to some light to moderate off-roading while camping.

Having said that, I ordered a RTT that will be mounted on CBI bed bars.

What strut/shock/leaf setup should I consider? I’ve heard a few people tell me that my current setup will fine to and just run it. Others say just do a Dakar leaf pack. Then others say 2 inch lift with leafs.

I just want to put together a setup that isn’t outrageous in cost. Something that is cost effective but also is able to tackle what I mentioned above.

The question is... what is your current setup not doing that you need it to do?

Your 4600s and stock ride height won't cause your truck to fall apart as soon as the tires touch dirt. If you're just starting off-roading, your skills will be your limiting at first--not your suspension. If you get more serious about off-roading, then you'll probably also want to add bigger tires, armor, a winch, etc... all of which will change what you need from your suspension.

I'm not an expert by any means, but I'd guess that the only thing you might "need" right now is a heavy-duty leaf spring or add-a-leaf to compensate for the added weight of your RTT and other gear. You'll know better once you see how the truck sits and drives with your tent and gear loaded. If you want to figure it out before the tent is installed, put some stuff in the bed (sand bags are cheap) to simulate the tent and rack's weight.

I appreciate the insight. I just want to make sure the truck is setup correctly before hitting a trail or camping. I’d rather not have something fail when I’m away from home.

Shakedown outings are good confidence boosters. Hit up a nearby county/state/national park for a night or two, and take the back roads to get there. That way you can comfortable with your gear without leaving cell phone/tow truck/"hey, I forgot something" range.

I'm surprised your question hasn't gotten more attention... usually people are full of ways for you to spend $2k on suspension :) . If you want some other opinions, you might have better luck asking in the 1st gen forum.

It’s funny that you say that. I was looking at an OME setup but I think I’m going to mount the RTT when it gets here and go from there.
