I’m looking for a well-made head unit that can be used with a backup camera, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth music under $400.

If its illumination is orange or red, that’s a plus.

    What brands/models are reputable?

You can't go wrong with Kenwood, Alpine, or Pioneer (in no particular order). Single or double din?

I've got a Kenwood that was right around $400. It has all the features you listed and everything works really well. Go down to Best Buy and play around with their displays to see which one you like. I forget why I chose the Kenwood over the others (maybe it was the price to features ratio). Factor in a dash kit and wiring harness to your budget.

    Increase your budget.
Then call crutchfield and buy the one with all the features. Be careful about compatibility with the steering controls and wireless features. Many many units still require you to plug in your phone.
