NEED HELP ASAP! DOG SPRAYED BY SKUNK!!

hello all. my wheaten-terrier just got sprayed by a skunk in our backyard. my wife is bathing him now with a concoction I found online--hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and dishwashing detergent. tomato juice was not recommended. the smell is awful. any other ideas? any and all input appreciated!!

Cold Coffee, Tomato Juice and my favorite, Douce in the women's section of the Drug store, spring time scented, that last one works the best. Good Luck!!

Professional groomer can take care of that. Best you can probably do is shampoo. Don't forget the dog is probably miserable too.

The old tomato sauce/paste routine does actually help cut down the smell pretty well. It's not a cure-all but it's better than nothing. Sorry man skunks stink.

 

I found that tomato juice made it worse, skunk/tomato smell was worse to me than just the skunk smell. just a couple baths with shampoo and some time was the best option when it happened to me.

not sure what its called, but we have some super dog shampoo that makes the dog smell like a french whorehouse after you wash him with it, and gets rid of the skunks fart from his fur. im not home else id tell you what exactly it is, but it works great. our dog usually gets sprayed once a year or so...

From what I've run across the solution you posted is about the best you can do. Other than that just have to wait it out. We hit a skunk in my friends truck about two weeks ago. He sprayed all over the wheel well and it still kinda smells.

 

yes, keep reading the dishsoap, hydro-peroxide and baking soda is the way to go. gonna run out to the store to get some more. and try to get him into the groomer tomorrow. unfortunately now the house smells too anyway thanks all for your input, it is appreciated.

 

Unfortunately not. I own a grooming shop, and from experience I can tell you there really isn't a remedy that cures all. It depends on how badly the dog got sprayed. My dog once got sprayed from about 8" away right between the eyes. He stunk for about 10 months whenever he got wet.

If it's a wheaten, you could always have it shaved.. That will help.

Wish I could be of more help, but that's a hardcore chemical your dog messed with.

But in highschool, my friend let the sears tire center (or something like it) do a balance and rotation and while his car was being lifted, a skunk ran in and sprayed the shit out of the engine bay, all up in there and everything.

It made its way into all the ventilation thoughout the car, into the seats, into the trunk, EVERYWHERE. 5 or 6 years later we still catch a wif of it every now and then.
