I regeared my truck not too long ago (5.29s). It has the issue of topping out at 86mph. My guess was the wheel sensors or something along those lines, are not working properly. I've heard a few things like recalibrating my speedo might fix it, I want to get it tuned but was told by my tuner that it wouldn't fix the top speed. Anyone know the solution?

My truck topped out at 83 with 5.29's and 33's the one time I tested to see how fast it would go.

For HondaGM, it is not at redline. When in 6th it is around 2800 rpm (IIRC).

OP, were you not aware of this when you researched regearing?

AFAIK, it can't be changed. Edit: Others point out that this can be changed with tuning software.

i really don't know. but do you drive 86 mph often? seems excessive. mine's a bit stressful to drive over 75. it's not a sedan.

    Welcome to tw.

I'll be the one to throw the gas on the fire.

Why would you want to go faster than 80 in a lifted/regeared truck?

maybe they live in Texas. where everyone treats the roads like the Indy 500. even over here on the east coast, i see big truck with texas plates trying to go 90+ on the freeway passing everyone on the road :bikewheelie2:

... I stopped pushing 80 a while ago. Even on stock gears the Taco is not a happy camper when it's in the left lane. On the days I want to play Ricky Bobby I'll grab the fiancee's turbo hatch. Not in the truck though. I let the brodozers go ahead to exude their tailgating tiny pee pee energy onto someone else.

Everything is working properly. This happens with 5.29's based on how the truck limits. Not based on wheel speed but driveline speed.

Not sure of the why, mine on 5.29s with bumpers and a plethora of other aerodynamic robbing parts got to 93 on 37s.

As to the "why" question others are asking, because people with modified vehicles like to do things with them so why the hell not push it?

There are many online top speed calculators. Simple math really as long as you don't forget any factors.

Things like tire dia, trans ratio, rear ratio, RPM.

However, they do not include CoD. Just moving in a vacumn.

So, if any given vehicle can hit redline (fuel cut) in high gear, then the formula will be accurate. That's called gear limited.

If you can't hit redline in high gear, it's generally drag limited. And the Tacoma is a brick for the most part.

And is your 86 GPS verified? Mucking with your tires and gears has your speedo all unhappy.

OTOH, the 'faux tune' from that Pedal Commander may be the problem.

You need a tune edit to change the axle ratio value to 5.29 so that the governor will be raised back to stock, or higher then. Your truck sees your new faster driveline speed and thinks you’re driving 110 mph or whatever it is (I don’t remember the exact stock governor value).

On a lot of the highways in Michigan the posted speed limit is 75mph. 85-86mph here is normal.

You're limited to the same driveline speed, but 37's give you increased ground speed.

This all depends on if folks are getting their reference speed from uncorrected speedo, corrected speedo, or gps.

I do mostly highway driving, I live in texas should say enough lol, i normally go around 80 and stay with the flow of traffic (alot of country highway).

I verified through gps. I do have a pedal commander so it might have something to do with it.

I've never had a problem going that fast in it, I've gotten up to 114 before letting off and there was no wobble or anything. I do alot of country highway driving so 80+ is the flow of traffic in Texas.

Im on 33s. My tuner just recommended the Hyper tech or rough country speedo calibrator so i might try one of those. Very true, i'm not driving a modified truck to be normal lol
