If your speedometer doesn't work then you need to check things at the Vehicle Speed Sensor on the output shaft of the Transfer Case.

Pin 1 (Black/Red) should have Battery Voltage with the Key on
Pin 2 (Blue) should be Ground
Pin 3 (Green/Red) is the signal wire, should be 0-12v pulses when the sensor gear is rotated.

I've got something similar going on with my 98. My speedo and tach would intermittently go out and zero while driving but never would throw a CEL. I could shut the truck off and as soon as i would restart the truck, they would work. The Temp/Gas gauges still worked along with the rest of the instrument cluster while this was going on. This went on for several months. I pulled the speedo in the tranny to see if it was seized up, spun freely with no issues. Recently, the tach/speedo went out completely, and threw the P0500 code. Sounds like electrical and really need to start doing some testing. Hoping it’s not the cluster itself. Any ideas?

My code also came from one of the ABS sensors in the front, one had a broken or loose wire at the connection plug coming from the harness. But the code did not go away until I changed the guage cluster for one that sent the signal to the ECM.
