Helping a friend rebuild a manual transmission on a 1998 4x4 Tacoma. Where do we find numbers or identifying information on the parts? Are there diagrams available to show gears, etc? Two drive gears are completely shredded. Wondering about identifying information in order to purchase and best place to purchase said parts. We are located in East Texas. Any help would be most appreciated.

go to the local dealer where you can see a parts image showing an exploded view of all the tranny parts to confirm the parts you need and get the correct part numbers for everything and then write down all the part names and numbers and prices.

then go here and compare the prices on those parts http://www.toyotaonlineparts.com/

buy from the cheapest priced place, which im sure will be the online place

If it's a 4cyl 4x4, it a 5spd w59 transmission and a v6 is the R150. Just google Toyota W59 or R150, breakdowns and diagrams. There is also an online manual for the W59 rebuild as well. You will have to have bearing pullers and a press to rebuild the tranny. Much cheaper to find a used tranny and replace it.

Is there any equivalent out there for Toyotas such as www.realoem.com for BMW? Its seems impossible to find part numbers for small items like bolts, screws, and clips.

I don't know of any websites that list the parts and diagrams that are easy to use. If you're Internet savvy there is the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) software floating around for download. With it you can pull up all the parts diagrams specific for your VIN. The diagrams show all the nuts, bolts and clips, etc. Part numbers for standard parts will be 10 digits like 90105-08203. Other parts are listed with 5 or 6 digits in the diagrams like 23300P (fuel filter), then you have to find the full 10 digit part number on a site like www.toyotapartsdeal.com under the appropriate section. The 23300P may correspond to "fuel filter" on many vehicles, but the 10 digit number identifies a specific part.
