i remember having to push my fabric in behind the handle very hard anough to see the retaining hook, "kinda looks like a horse shoe" to remove it. if i remember right i was able to grab it with a pair of needle nose pliers and a flat head. but that was on a 2001 model though

It's probably got a retaining hook like rooster said. Shaped like a horseshoe somewhat.. I wouldnt try to force it or it will break.

I just installed speakers in my 03 this week. There's a retaining C clip that holds it on. Try this, it helped me with one of them that was being stubborn:

You can use a pick tool though to get them out, thats what I did on one and that little rag trick on the other.

you really don't need the special tool.
you can push in the panel and grab the retainer with a hook and pull it out. It will go flying.
Another way is to take a shop rag or similar and (one layer) and push it down to the handle. hold the rag ends so it goes around the handle and roll down the window. the rag will catch the clip and hold it . then you can remove the handle. Might take a few times but in a pinch this has always worked for me.
