First thing to do will be to get under it and look at the frame for any signs of rust. Definitely take a test drive too.

Where has the truck lived most of its life? If in the rust go over the frame quite fully...

It seems like a really good deal, but you left out a few details. Is it an access cab or double cab? Is it a TRD sport or off road? Or did someone just put stickers on it? Does it have the factory tow package? What motor and trans? Does it have a salvage title?

With that extra info, the price is about typical for that truck with 125,000 to 150,000 miles on it and bone stock. So, what makes the one you're looking at a good deal, is the super low miles and all the goodies. If it's all legit, no serious mechanical issues and no signs of rusty frame or major body repairs, buy it.

It's not a bad price. I just paid $15.5k for my access cab with 30k more miles. You have to really check those mods though, make sure whoever did them did it right, and not a hack job.

I just found the truck on craigslist. That's a good looking truck. He listed it 20 days ago with 67,000 miles for $20k. There's another ad that was updated 2 hours ago with 68,000 miles and an asking price of $19.5k. How did you get him down to $17k?

Oooooooohhhhh that throws a whole nother twist on things. Look underneath it. If the frame is all bubbly and flaking and there's holes rusted through the frame near the catylitic converters, RUN FOREST RUN!
I wonder if the current owner recently bought it(after the frame replacement owner buy cut off date) and is now in a panic to get rid of it.

Well, the frame recall details haven't been finalized, but it's possible that if you buy/ bought your truck after something like jan 1, 2017, you don't get a free frame.

Tons of bubbling on the frame and flaking but no holes but I passed didn't want to take a gamble, you can see the paint bubbling on the rocker panel like the rust was surfacing. Sad day.

I personally don't like the idea of buying a truck with an average of 6500 miles per year. It probably sat around untouched a lot. Could spell issues.

Also, I love modded vehicles, but I don't trust other peoples work. Another downside to me. WTH does custom shocks mean? Doubt that.

I'm not expert, heck Im looking to buy just like you, but those flakes would stop me from buying. Did you tap it with something like a tool?

    OFf topic a bit:
For those with more experience, how can you tell surface rust over rust that has set internally? For example, Ive seen some "brown" marks in some brake discs.
