Is this baddddd? Is this bad? (You got a fucking dart in your neck man!)

Ok so I have 116k on my 2013 Tacoma 4wd A/T. I just changed the rear diff fluid and found some small metal shavings on the magnetic drain plug. Mostly it was fine metal sludge dust. But you can see in the photo there were 2 or 3 noticeable smaller metal shavings. Deff not full on chunks. Photo attached.

PS- The fluid looked normal semi translucent not complete sludge and didn’t smell terribly rank.

I also should mention I was able to add more fluid than the recommended capacity. Somewhere between 3.5-3.8qts. The manual calls for only 3.1qts of oil. I was waiting for the oil to spill out of the fill plug. And not really keeping track of how much I added. Also I don’t think I was able to squeeze the full amount out of each squeeze tube of oil. Hence the .4-.7 extra variable.

Should I be worried? Am I ok? Someone tell me I am ok please.

Is slightly overfilling the rear diff by .4-.8qts bad enough I should drain it and refill with the appropriate amount.

Anyways any help from someone who knows more than me would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance!

That looks pretty normal to me if it's never been serviced.
If it isn't making any noise I wouldn't be worried about it.

Looks like drill chips from the factory. Not uncommon to find a few in our diff cases, especially if the fluid has never been changed before.

Unless you're noticing any other symptoms, you're likely in the clear, send it.

Recently changed my front, rear, and t-case. Rear was surprisingly good with no metal buildup, front was terrible. I’d vote that you’re in the clear based on fluid color, odor and lower than average miles.

Same as above, looks fine to me. I sent in a sample to Blackstone when I first bought mine because at 80k miles I didn't think the previous owner changed it. Had some gunk on the plug but oil analysis said it was good to go. If you have concern, dump the fluid at 30k and send in for analysis and they'll let you know for sure.
