Michelin Defender LTX. You absolutely will not regret them, I promise. Yeah, they cost a bit more up front but keep them rotated and you'll get double the mileage of a lesser set, easily, and occasionally they go on sale at Discount Tire. One of the best attributes of these is the way the siping goes all the way through the block, so rain traction doesn't fade until you're down to the wear bars. They're actually pretty good off-pavement, too, with the exception of deep mud. I love the way they look, as well - I don't need flames on my sidewalls, lol.

A while back I found this post about a Tacoma owner with nearly 200k on his set(!). If this isn't a ringing endorsement, I don't know what is.

    Been running KO's for years.

Get yourself a set of KO2 All terrain T/A. No road noise, amazing traction, and last forever. my last set lasted me 80K.

Yea mostly all the tacomas ive pulled up next too have the Michelin Defender LTX. yes ive been pulling up next to Tacos too see for some good tires lol. Looking like a weirdo. But definitely sound great and im also going back to my original size. Its sad too see these go in my garage but i dont go off-roading anymore. These are pretty heavy also and it eats gas. But like i said i mostly just commute around the citie and once in a while go to nearby lakes. image.jpg

    Yes, this.

If you're not off-roading with it, or even if you only *occasionally* go off the pavement, I wouldn't bother with a KO2 or any of the other all-terrains. They are overkill, and definitely stay away from E load range tires as well, they're too heavy for your needs (worse MPGs).

Well, I don't have a ton of experience with road tires, I have always had at least E load all-terrains. The tires that came on my '17 4Runner are Michelin Defenders. I've got about 12k miles on them so far, and they did survive a trip out a washed out trail to Lexington Arch in Great Basin NP. I used to have a 5 lug, and I just put whatever tires were on sale on that thing, don't remember which ones - didn't really care.

Honestly, I would just stick to the major brands and get whatever the shop has on sale. Bridgestone, Michelin, Dunlop, Goodyear.

I'll put a plug in for Firestone Destination LE2. Mine are quiet and have worn well.

I ran the Firestone Destination A/T for over 55k on a 5 tire rotate. They still have at least 5k+, 10k if you push them.

As mentioned, get the best "highway" tire you can afford with the best mileage rating. Most tires will do fine off pavement unless the ground is soggy or loose dirt.

Cooper, Mastercraft (off-brand Cooper) are decently cheap and have over 50k mileage rating.

A quiet tire is important too, so reading reviews will be the best to get an idea.

I know this video was 5 years ago and it was a heavy duty tire but this still worries me :(

    Michelin Defenders

    Bridgestone Duelers

    Both great street tires.

Both available at Costco, usually one or the other is on sale for $70 off via the manuf. Time your purchase right and get 1 cent installation per wheel. Yes, 4 cents.

Comes with lifetime rotation/balance/nitrogen fill and a great road hazard warranty all from Costco.

Keep in mind that high treadwear ratings only have value if you drive high miles. As in you'll wear out the tread within about 5 years. In 5 years time, regardless of tread depth, the sidewalls are subject to be checking/age & grip is diminished due to compound deterioration.

Also high treadwear means a hard compound from the beginning, having less grip from the beginning, impacting pavement performance wet or dry.

    For the win!!!
The Michelin LTX's are the best passenger style truck tires with truly amazing grip on pavement in all conditions.
A good friend has them on his t100 and drives snow, wet, dirt/gravel roads on canoe trips and the highway to get there. Never had an issue.

I haven't seen too many of them in the wild, but those Desert Hawks are what came on my current truck when I bought it, actually. They look super tough and did great off road the few times I got to really use them but they wore fast on pavement, as all mud tires do. Then you just start feeling guilty about wasting your cool tires. I know how it goes. I really think you'll be happy with the Michelins if that's what you go with. Discount Tire has a 10% off instant rebate on them right now.

Dawg, I was gonna make a joke about drowning out all the squeaks and rattles of an old truck with tire noise but I remembered he's probably gonna be stuck in traffic and never hear them anyways :luvya:

I've gone thru a few different at tires on my 4runner and taco. Last year I bought some cooper atp3 for the runner. Love them.
Taco is on the second set of fierce attitude. Not as happy with them the second time.
