I tried my first oil change today...i swear the incredible hulk works for Ram...how the heck did you get your filters off the first time? Ive tried all kinds of filter wrenches in fact i gotta go by advance auto to return two I broke, ive tried the screw driver trick to no avail the filter will not even budge, its battered bruised and punctured but still cant get it off. so the truck is sitting in the driveway with an unbudge able filter, not even an inch! how the heck do you get these darn suckers off for the first oil change!

anyone on tw have any suggestions?

    Typical.

Kawasaki hired the same gorilla to install the filters on their motorcycles.

    neglect, mostly.
drill a hole through it and then use a piece of rebar to get the leverage you need?

hmmm. . . . stupid question, but have you sprayed some liquid wrench or wd40 up towards the threads? . . . .but im out of ideas. maybe use temperature as a variable. somehow get the filter cold which will cause it to shrink? . . ok that sounds stupid just reading it. i don't know man.

yeah i know, he said he tried that. . . was just trying to think of someway to get him more leverage. though im not real sure where the filters are on those trucks.

Use a flat head screw driver and a hammer, or a really long punch with a sharp edge or chisel, and beat it off from the lip. Use it to drive it around at an angle, don't punch through it.

Worst case, I'd tear off the outter metal casing so I could get a flat head on the heavier base metal and try to hammer it loose that way.

If you get the outter casing off, you should be able to get a flathead or a center punch on the holes and hammer it around. Be careful though, you don't want to bend the threaded part otherwise you're really up shit's creek. Maybe try a little heat on the threaded part if you tear apart the casing? :notsure:

I haven't tried this method, just throwing it out there because it seems like you are running out of ideas.

You get it done? You try a screw driver and tapping it sideways like I said?

Strap wrench is the best bet here man. Don't buy a junky one. Get a good one and it'll get you through.

Get near the base of the filter where it meets the block/mounting point and muscle it.

I ain't like Shemicals, but I've never met an oil filter that I couldn't get off yet.

I would have suggested maybe bringing the vehicle to operating temperature and trying to take it off with the metal having expanded a bit but I guess that's really out of the question now.

They make a special wrench for cummins equipped dodge trucks..

It clamps on really tight and holds well,

It also helps to take the passenger side battery out or at least move it to get to it,

Also be careful taking the drain plug out they can strip, i need to get anew one before i do my next one because it doesnt have much turns left in it ..

courtesy of Ram the truck got towed to the dealership after I told them what went down. The ill tempered something complained that I brought the truck back until I told her that they are going to change my oil using my oil, she argued and i looked at the service manager and he said they can ring up the free oil change using my oil. she whined about how its not her fault because nobody taught her how to ring up an oil change with the customer bringing in their own oil and stormed off. about an hour after they pulled the truck in the bay the manager calls me in the middle of happy time with my girl that the truck is done...we ride up their and he tells me everythings finished and that they need to put the oil in but the tech went to break, I asked if another tech can put it in he said all of them are at lunch, I asked if he can put it in he said no, I asked if I could put it in, I again got a no. 2 hours later I get another call that the truck is done but that I no longer have a powertrain warranty. I brought up Magnusson Moss and was sent on my way by the dealership. I called up Ram, got confirmation that my warranty will not be voided and they advised me to keep oil change records and have the dealer sign off that all my oil bottles are sealed before service and if I am to have any warranty issues in the future call Ram before the dealership and present the case number and they will take care of everything

I hope I never have to take the truck back and thank got the filter that was cranked on there at the factory is finally off

    thanks for all your help!

Im thinking bout adding a bypass filter to help with soot accumulation in the oil, but i hafta speak with corperate first to make sure it wont void the warranty lol
