The cover on the power port in my 2005 tacoma broke off. I got another part, and it looks like it just plugs in, but have to remove the old one.

Anyone know the best way to remove the small power plug next to the ciraette lighter?

I am afraid of braking the dash taking it out, must be a trick to do this....

All you have to do is:

Grab a hold of it with you finger pull out and turn at the same time. Normally you have to turn 1/4 to 1/3 of a turn and it will come out.

Place your figer inside for some leverage!!!!No smart A** comments here!!!

    Good luck

No way, the thing is not budging.......my fingers are raw. Busted out the pliers, it doesn't move.

Any tutorials on taking your whole dash apart :-(

I got it out with a lot of force, there is a trick to this.!!!!!

There are two small plastic tabs that hold it in place. Like the cigaratte lighter; the 12v plug is made up of the plastic housing and a metal socket. Once the metal socket is slid in, the tabs in plastic housing will no longer bend in to allow removal. You must remove the metal socket barrel first!!!!

1.) You have to somehow find/feel where another tab that locks the metal socket to the plastic housing.

    2.) Remove the metal socket

3,) then the plastic sleeve slides right out.

Way easier said than done, hopefully this will help save someones dash.....

Lower dash is scratched up and hole the plug is inserted into got a little messed up, atleast I don't have to look at a broken 12v plug anymore.

I just changed my power outlet cover in my 05 Tacoma. Look inside the metal barrel. At approximately the 11:00 posistion you will see a small plastic tab sticking into the metal barrel. Carefully break it with a small screwdriver. It's okay to break it as long as you are replacing the cover / plastic barrel, as it is part of the cover / plastic barrel assy. After breaking the tab carefully pull the metal barrel straight out. You may need to pry it with a screwdriver to get it started and perhaps use two pairs of plyers to pull it out. Be careful there is an electrical plug connected to the back of it. Once you have it out and disconnected from the plug. Use the small screwdriver to pry / break the two plastic tabs holding the cover / plastic barrel in place. They are at 3:00 and 9:00. Once the two tabs are broken, the cover / plastic barrel will slide right out. Reverse for installation.

Good information is always appreciated. I have to do this myself on my truck to tap the power lugs on the back for a satellite radio and a USB rocker switch installation. One side will be used to power the satellite radio the other will go to power the USB charging port/rocker switch since they both have fuses somewhere in there. :oldglory:
