2006 Tacoma 2wd TRD E-locker rear. The D shaft has a good bit of radial movement at the pinion flange so I'm assuming the pinion bearing is toast. I haven't checked the pinion nut for torque but it has been this way for a little while so I'm assuming there is bearing damage. I called Toyota w vin# and they said it has a 3.73 ratio.

    Questions

    1) Can I put a standard non E locker diff in the E locker housing without much modification?

    2) Can I a put a 4.10 (or other ratio besides 3.73) diff in there without f'ing up the speed sensors/ABS?

    3) What other diffs from what vehicles will fit in this housing? Is it a 8"? 8.4"? Are they interchangable? I Don't use the E locker nor does it go offroad so it doesn't really matter if its open.

All other considerations that I should take will be noted if you guys have anything to add. This just needs to be fixed as cheap/soon as possible so I'd prefer to just get a used 3rd and slap it in quickly. I don't know if there is any gear damage either so I'd like to avoid buying a master rebuild kit, tear it down, and then find out I need a ring and pinion too. This is a DD and needs to be back up ASAP.

Thanks in advance guys. You seem like a knowledgeable bunch

    Jared

Would I possibly be better off buying a whole used axle assembly, non locked, from a wrecked Taco? Remember, just needs to be cheap/fast swap

First thing I would do is give ECGS a holler and ask them how quickly they could get you hooked up with a rebuilt 3rd. Their prices seem quite reasonable and they know their stuff with Toyota diffs.

If that's a no-go, then yep look for a salvaged axle assembly.

thanks Iroh. I just looked them up. They will remain an option for sure. I have found a couple diffs on CL local in the $400-$500 range. Will any FJ/Taco/4runner E locker 3rds work? As in, are they all 8.x" ring gear, same driveshaft bolt pattern/axle housing bolt pattern? If so, one of these local ones I'm finding should work.

    Thanks again
