Can anybody help me figure out exactly where this awful noise is coming from? This is a 2006 Reg cab Tacoma 4x4 manual. I just bought this truck a few weeks ago and recently started noticing this sound at higher RPMs while driving on highway. Noise starts around 55-60mph or approximately 2500rpms. First thought was loose heat shield so tightened it up and even took it off and drove it.. wasn’t the problem. Checked everything else out underneath the best I could and couldn’t find nothing. So I decided to put the rear end on jack stands and record a couple videos. It’s obviously in the drivetrain somewhere and to me it sounded like it was coming from directly below the back of the cab. It would only make that noise at 55+ when I let my foot off the gas and coast. Then as soon as I gave it even a tiny bit of gas it would stop.. I’m stumped. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I could not figure out how to post the videos. Says wrong format and don’t know how to change the format . It’s just a video recorded on my iPhone so not sure why I couldn’t upload it

Ujoints were my first guess so I changed them over the weekend and the noise is still there. And the ujoints I replaced still looked good too, but changed them anyways.

And my truck doesn’t have a carrier bearing. Thought that was strange myself, it’s a 1 piece driveshaft with only 2 universal joints. May not be factory driveshaft either, I just bought this truck the way it is about a month ago so I’m not sure.

I wish I could figure out how to post videos so you all could hear/see it better

Your videos have to be online so you can post a LINK to them. Most folks use YouTube.

Carrier bearings are part of the differential. What I think everyone is talking about is the center support bearing but you said you don’t have one bc one piece DS.

Do u joints have any play? Is this both in 2 and 4wd? Doesn’t quite sound like universals to me...

@Aslifer23 OP, this is a common issue with regular cab trucks when they are lifted. Our trucks come from the factory with a one piece driveshaft, and the noise comes from the slip joint in the driveshaft. I quiet mine down by greasing the slip joint, but it only last a few days. Some others have reported that it helps if you flip the driveshaft, but I haven't tried that yet.

Just out of curiosity, did you buy this car private sale or through a dealer? And are you located in a state that allows "as is" sales?

could be not enough engagement of the slipjoint due to the lift and one piece driveshaft. Use proper lube on the slip joint, something HIGH in moly like Loctite Moly Paste

    https://www.amazon.com/Loctite-2342...Moly+Paste&qid=1569426553&s=industrial&sr=1-1

Also they do make driveshaft spacers to put on the flange to get the slipjoint back into a state of engagement thats proper.

This is all assuming it is infact the slip joint.

Ah ok yea I was thinking of the center bearing that I don’t have on my truck. And have only noticed in 2 wheel drive. But I don’t feel any play in ujoints, and I just replaced them 3 days ago.

Private. And not sure what you mean by “as is”. I live in Kansas, don’t know if that helps you or not

Some states require dealers to warranty everything they sell, even if for only 90 days.
Private sales don't have that protection though.

It was just a curiosity thing to see if the seller could help you out on fixing it.
