As the name suggests, i need a little pointing in the right direction.
(Although my car is a 4Runner, they use the "same" 3.4L engine)

I have a 3.4L (5VZ-FE) with the TRD exhaust. I recently had the muffler replaced for a flowmaster super 40.

i noticed a bit more burble, and an insanely powerful rumble at 1500 RPM.

Now, if i removed the resonator- what would happen? Would it burble more? Crackle? Would i loose the powerful rumble? Advice needed, thanks!

It would be louder and more rumble

Would you be able to elaborate on this? The car has a deep rumble that sounds almost like a subwoofer at a steady, consistent frequency. I assumed this was because the resonator was disrupting the sound waves to make it sound steady.

In what way will the rumble increase? thanks

Sounds like a typical Flowmaster 40. There loud and make that rumble. I would bet its louder without the resonator

My only concern was that i'd loose that deep rumble and get more of a meaty V6 sound. The rumble is so deep my phone can't capture it, and it kind of tickles your ears.

I thought this was the resonator because most V6's don't seem to have that deep, boomy rumble.

The car makes very little noise past 3K RPM though. That's where i get confused. the car is loud and rumbly, and at 3K it's as if someone muted my exhaust. I figured the resonator was to blame, but i wouldn't want to ruin that boomy rumble that came with the TRD exhaust

I know the rumble well. The flowmasters work off directing sound waves. Hence the change at higher rpms. You're going to have to find a nice trade off or live with the noise. Can't have both.

Okay- i appreciate your time. Can i just check i'm understanding you correctly?

With resonator: Less high RPM noise, more smooth rumble

Without resonator: More high RPM noise, maybe a little higher pitch, and a less smooth rumble

    Do 4runners even have resonators?

Yes- it was a very expensive TRD exhaust. It came with a tuned resonator and a muffler. The muffler started rattling, so i ended up with a flowmaster super 40. Now, i'm debating the trd resonator.

Ah gotcha. It might end up being raspier and a little bit louder if you remove it.

Yes- i was hesitant because i didn't want to loose the really loud, smooth rumble it had. I figured the only way a 3.4 V6 could rumble like that would be the resonator messing with exhaust frequencies.

How long is the resonator? you could always replace it with a smaller one to smooth it out a bit but not lose as much volume

It's about 8 inches long, and i'd say about 4 inches wide (cylinder). I figured that was kind of small already?

The low RPM noise is often called 'drone'. It can be a killer for lots of folks under hwy cruising conditions (lower RPM). Just miserable that is.

Removing the resonator will make that worse.

Interesting. I've heard lots about drone, but i heard it rattles your interior. I haven't got any rattles or anything.

I contacted TRD to figure out the frequency the resonator is trying to delete, but haven't heard anything.

You believe it's trying to reduce the amount of drone instead of the higher RPM harshness?

keep the resonator. takes the tingyness away from the chambered mufflers like a fm40

I've been told from you it reduces tingyness and i've been told by Clearwater that it's attempting to reduce drone.
So now what should i assume it's trying to reduce?

It probably helps with both. At this point I don't know what else to say except delete it with a test pipe and put it back if it sounds worse to you
