Aloha fellow TW users! I am going to be in the market for new ring and pinion gears for my Taco soon and wanted to know if anyone on this site has had theirs done on 'Oahu. If so could you please share with us what combo you used, who did it and how much it cost? I am planning on going with 4.56 gears running 33" tires. Any and all help is always appreciated guys, Mahalo!

Ron, thanks bro! Fast response and exactly what I was wanting to hear. I can live with paying a little over $1500 installed. Can you tell me what it was like before you did the re-gear? Especially traveling over the H-3/Likelike/Pali? Again, Mahalo for your help!

Rotha just put new gears and lockers front and back on his 2013 Tacoma. He did most of it at his house. Saved home a bunch if cash

It was a chore to get the next gear. Always had to give it more gas and let the engine climb through the rpms. Always! Now , its peppy . Feels great, changes gears like its supposed and when in 4low. Feels like I could climb some really steep hills with no problem. For me its a must when going to larger tires.

I always do my own gears. Toyotas are easy to set up compared to Dana Axles. The FSM has all the specs. I also get my gears from East Coast Gear Supply. Even though they are on the east coast, they usually come out less than anyone locally. If I didn't have a broken ankle, I may have offered up my services.

WOW. I must say that this has got to be the most loyal of all forums and I am just in awe... @Topher, @Ron, @1Uzrnr. I truly think that this has to be one of the best decisions that I have ever made. Buying my Taco and logging into this site, that is. I just sold my 2004 F250 super duty with 6.5" lift, 35's, almost 500 RWHP and decided to buy something smaller and more efficient/reliable. The Diesel was too much and it was time to downsize. Anyways, I just wanted to express my true gratitude and appreciation guys, Aloha!

P.S.- I am stationed on MCBH and you all will be seeing my truck around, hopefully lifted/rims/tires/exhaust. As soon as I get my permanent registration and safety it's on!

I was looking at 4.10 gears myself..but still not sure. I know I need to do something now that i've been riding on 33's for a little while and could use a little more power.

Big diesel sounded like a lot of fun to drive :p

Does a Kevin W work for you?

I have a soft spot for Airframers since I was one once upon a time.:D

Do you work for MALS or the P-3's? I was a welder at MALS before I got out.

I would definitely do something about your drivetrain if you're running 33's. You can cause damage to your tranny in the long run if you don't. I'm sure 4.10 would be fine, but Hawaii has a ton of hill climbing to deal with and I am towing a trailer (2,500-3500 lbs) which is why I need more umpf.

The Diesel was, believe it or not, way too fast for me and my family. Decided to tone it down a little and start getting ready for retirement life on the Big Island!:)

I do have a Kevin W (Ordnanceman) that works for me. I am about to head out on deployment soon to catch up with them, want me to tell him you said hi? Laters!

Thanks for your prior service Shipmate! Are you still screwing, nutting and bolting? :D

I work at the hangars in the VP's. I have been jumping from one to another for the last 14 years. If you were in any of them, I am sure that we crossed paths a time or two. Sweet ride BTW!

I think the Kevin I know is an airframer, dunno if that also means he's an ordanceman...Navy has an interesting way of using job titles :p

I drive H3 everyday for work but usually in my DD...but I've been using my truck almost every day instead hehe..

    Thanks!

I am, but on my junk and doing corrosion repair for the Marines motor pool. I am also going back to school for Engineering.

I came from the FA-18 community and got lucky with welding orders to MCBH. I did do all the on aircraft welding on the P-3 intakes between 05 and 08.

Talk with the mechs on base. I'm sure someone on that big ol base has done a set or two haha. Over here I had mine done on my 94 pickup. (Elocker conversion in the rear) and then a regular 8" high pinion diff up front and the average labor cost was about 250 a diff. The gears I could get for 180-200 a set. Then since I was in there and didn't want to pull it apart again I had new bearings put in and a solid crush sleeve In up front
Solid up front is the way to go. Takes longer to put in but better. Will keep your pinion preloaded set right and not loosen up if bounced off a rock or seven.

Pointy nose guy, huh? Its all G. I am sure that you have your hands full at work if you are performing corrosion repair on all the vehicles at the motor pool. I'm sure I'll drive past you one day soon and if I do, just look for the Big Hawaiian guy throwing out the big SHAKA!!! Aloha.
