Need help with Taurus 738

We put about 50 rounds of practice ammo through it tonight with no problems. The problem I am having is with ejecting an unfired round from the chamber. I am using Hornady critical defense rounds when it does this. I can load up an entire magazine with practice FMJ ammo and manually eject each one with no problems. When I attempt this with the Hornady the cartridge will not clear the barrel or slide as far as I can tell and will jam. This doesn't occur when shooting but is a pain if I want to load other ammo in the gun. The Hornady ammo is a hair longer than the FMJ's so I am sure that is the major cause. Also I am forcefully trying to eject the round by pulling the slide all the way back as hard as possible. Any suggestions to remedy this? I just don't see how firing more rounds to break it in will fix this certain problem.





It's a length problem on the ammo, my S&W body guard choked on it as well.






I was afraid of that. What's weird is that I see alot of people online using it with their 738. I guess it will eject when firing but not when manually racking the slide. Also I will add it is not every time but about 40% of the time. Any recommendations on shorter ammo?




Just spoke with Taurus customer service and they said they had not heard of this problem before but I didn't really expect them to say otherwise. Could it be something I am doing wrong? I appreciate dralarm's advice but I am still puzzled that through all my internet searching no one else with this gun is having this problem. Thanks

That is one of the two I was going to get tonight the other being gold dot's. Do they still sale the Hydra Shock's or isn't it other some other name? Maybe I am confused.

It sounds like you're not pulling the slide all the way to the rear when you're ejecting the unfired round, and the round just gets spun around near the breach and it stops the slide from locking back to the forward position.

 

I am definitely pulling it all the way back. It almost looks like the cartridge isn't seating all the way back against the firing pin but I can't tell unless I pull the slide back a little. Doing that may be moving it out a little though. If I do it in slow motion the round just isn't clearing the breach. If I do the same speed with practice FMJ ammo it clears fine. Beats all I have ever seen. I am suspecting the little rubber tip on the Hornady is the problem.

 

Many semi-automatic pistols are rather picky about the ammo they like and don't like. Its like the guy that told the doctor, "It only hurts when I do this. What should I do?" Doctor replied. "Stop doing that."

Your Taurus does not like the Hornady product so don't use it. Try other quality manufacturers until you find one that works well in your gun. Then use those cartridges.

 

I do not rely on any pistol until I have identified what it likes and doesn't like. In my experience some of the worst offenders are 1911's with GI feed ramps.

 

I agree with you there to an extent. I have no doubt that I can find another round that will function fine in it but I am trying to figure out why this one isn't cycling manually. It just seems like this should be something that could be fixed by a competent gunsmith. I am just looking for ideas to get me started. Thanks

 

Well, if the round tip isn't clearing the breach, maybe it's what you had said earlier......the round is too long for the weapon. A spent shell casing is ejecting fine because they're shorter without the bullet. An unfired round is having trouble because it's so long.

 

Yeah I guess I am over thinking it. I just have that mentality that if it is "broke" I want to fix it. In this case it isn't really broke but I still want to fix it! haha. I may just take it to a smith and see what they can do. Either way I am going to get a round that will cycle as is just to be safe. Other than that it performed flawlessly at the range last night and the wife loves it!

 

Forgive me but I thought this thread was about a gun not ejecting properly. Unspent ejections that stick are not a problem until you are trying to clear a misfire while someone is shooting at you. I am not going to carry a pistol with a cartridge that does not work properly in any and every circumstance whethe it is fired or not.

Yes I agree. That is the only time I could forsee this probelm being an issue. I got a few answers on the other forum this was posted on and many said they don't believe a gunsmith could really fix anything. I guess all the dimensions of each part in the gun are only as big as they need to be to get such a small weapon. I will just have to get some different ammo and be happy.
