My 05 X-Runner got rear ended and the insurance company is declaring it totalled... is it worth keeping it to repair? Thanks for your inputs

How many miles are on it?
Have the head gaskets ever been replaced?

Say goodbye to it, safe to assume the bed hit the cab as well.

    I’d part with it.

I don’t have the ability, money, or “want” to repair something like that.

Depends on whether or not you can fix it.
    Or
depends on if you think you can keep/sell enough parts off of it to make it worth buying it back...

Do you have the time, space, tools, knowledge to part it out and sell bits for more than your buy back cost?

Is the frame bent, and did the bed make contact with the cab? More pics!

I'd make a bet with the bumper rolled under like that, the frame is bent between where the bumper mounts to the frame and rear spring/frame mount.

Frame is definitely bent. That is obvious by having both the bumper and back of the bed (note where it cracked) aimed towards the pavement. Now, depending on damage further forward, this could be a candidate worth saving if you can get a line on a new bed.
If the $ and time are available, back half the frame and install airbags with a triangulated 4 link.

Sorry for your loss. Hopefully you didn’t suffer injuries.

I’ve never done a part it out but I imagine you need garage space and time to deal with taking parts off and shipping them. After you might break even or come out ahead.

If you go with totaled and a check from the insurance make sure they don’t screw you. Do what you can to emphasize pain and suffering. Whatever you think it was worth, it was worth more in today’s market.

thanks for all replies... I think I could fix it just didn't have much time coz I work full time... the frame on the right side is bent a little, the cab has a minor dent, airbags were not deployed and the truck is still running well, the body shop said changing the entire bed makes the repair 75% done

Totalled mostly means it's going to cost more than it is worth to fix. What it is worth to you, on the other hand, is completely up to you. With enough money you can pound out some dents, do a frame and panel swap, etc. Then you may have to go through the process for an assembled vehicle title, depending on where you live.

The ends don't justify the means... I think you'd be walking through a minefield, and even after it's repaired, every squeak and rattle will probably make you think twice...

There comes a time when we are told we can no longer play the game. This truck needs to be told that, after 200,000 miles and 17 years, it's time to call it a career.

While I don't doubt that in terms of 'visual bulk' of the repair, and the easy peasy bolt off and bolt on of a replacement bed, it's the other 25% that is the killer in this case.

That being the frame. Thats where the time (and time = $) and skills to do it right come into play.

And at the end of all that, you have a salvage title vehicle with a 200k driveline.

Salvage title generally means it's worth about 1/2 of market price, and in some states I understand that insurer's won't even write coverage. And as far as selling it, you'd be pretty much limited to a cash buyer, as lenders balk at a salvage title.

If you dive into this, better know what's hidden under the waters.
