    neglect, mostly.
im already sub'd from the previous page, but (if you don't mind), post up pics of what you get when you do.

oh and i personally am not on the "get the biggest caliber!" bandwagon either. if in the unfortunate event that hopefully never happens and you have to shoot someone, A - just showing your peace is what will probably be stopping them, and B - if you capped somebody robbing you with even a .22 a couple of times they're not gonna say "hahaha, you should have bought a .45!" and go back about their business, theyre out for count!

Sorry bud, going to disagree with you right there. Most criminals escalate their criminal behavior over time, usually leading to violence of some sort orr the other. Therefore, a "non-violent" thief is likely to become a violent thief. I wouldn't want to let the bastard increase his "potential" for more violent crimes when I could end his or her criminal career.

I guess I just have a different opinion on this issue. I also don't believe most criminals can be "reformed." Thinning the herd is OK with me.

Anybody watch the special about the Secret Service last night on G4? Happen to notice what they said their weapon of choice was? The Sig Sauer P229.

This thread and that special made me want to go out and shoot, so I cleaned my P229 up last night and hit the range this morning. It had been too long. :D

On the surface, I totally agree with you. But I live in a state where it is deemed unacceptable to act as your own law enforcement:mad:

That being said, I don't want to risk being Bubba's cell mate and deserting my family over an F'in flatscreen tv....they can have the tv, hell, they can have my truck or anything else too -- its all insured. But -- if they try to harm my daughters, dog, or wife (in order of importance), its double tap to the chest and one to the cranial-ocular cavity.

OP - sorry the thread got jacked a bit, but all this is good stuff for you to ponder, and do let us know what you got -- and post pics, gun porn!

HAHA... order of importance; that's good! Cool. I got it and I think your concerns are valid.

OP: He's right, sorry the thread was jacked a bit but there is some good info provided by members.

I'm not trying to be a douche but this post is a bit ignorant. It has been proven that it is not all about the caliber.

It's been beat to death in this thread already but it's all about what the shooter is comfortable with.

Of the three you mentioned the Springfield is the one I would feel most comfortable with. I own one and have found it to be an outstanding buy for the quality.

I generally do not care for sub compacts and mini hand guns (the LCP specifically). They are usually chambered in weaker calibers, are hard/dangerous to control (can the index finger, of your offhand, cover the barrel while aiming?), have greater felt recoil than a larger gun firing a larger caliber projectile, have reduced magazine capacity versus larger guns (6+1 vs 10+1 in CA), and offer no cost benefit either when purchasing the gun or in the ongoing cost of ammo (cost for .380 is often greater than 9mm, and in a pinch, is harder to find). So I recommend a larger weapon with a size and shape you find comfortable.

For me the caliber argument is a closed book. Law enforcement studies have found that while larger caliber rounds are more effective at stopping an assailant, the increased effectiveness tapers off once you reach the 9mm size. Shot placement is as important, if not more so, an indicator of the effectiveness of a given shot, so choose your caliber based on what is cost effective and comfortable for you to practice with. Coupling a proven round, at or above 9mm, with your best performance gives you the best opportunity to protect yourself. I am a big dude and live for my 9mm handguns. They are cost effective, controllable, and fun to practice with. My .357 Mag snubby and 3'' 1911 in .45 ACP are fun, but I know I am not as dependable with them.

Hope this helps and have fun shopping.

First off I have experience in hundreds of firearms. I am an avid hunter and an x amorer in the US Army. I have half a dozen Law enforcement officers that would agree with me. Doesn't really matter what you own. It boils down to hitting your target. I own many handguns, rifles, and shotguns. Without a doubt you are looking for something with knockdown power and chances are you will be shooting in near dark if anything should happen. A shotgun is hands down the best way to go. They make plenty of tactical (small) options for home defense. If you are not proficient with a hand gun, chances are in the heat of the moment you wouldn't hit the broad side of a barn, much less a perp rushing you or your family. If a handgun eases your mind then by all means get one, but if you are truly looking to defend yourself then a shotgun should be your choice.

And one more thing... I use a light weight 44 mag for my home protection. Not because it's a big scary bullet that will stop anything in it's tracks, but because I am quite good with it and I am very comfortable with it in any situation. Well, that and I know if anyone messed with my family they would be very very sorry.

Since you don't have much experience with guns, I think a revolver would be a better choice than a semi-auto. No safety, clip, or slide to fumble with. In the event that you had to use it there would be much less to go wrong. A good revolver is almost fail proof. The only thing you have to remember is to pull the trigger. A light is a must since you cant hit what you cant see, and more importantly you don't want to shot a family member. Just my 2 cents
